June 27, 1950 - November 14, 2019

We are profoundly saddened to announce the passing of Leona Louise Hogue on November 14, 2019 at Riverview Health Centre.
Leona is lovingly remembered by her daughter Trish (Bryan); sister Anne; niece Melissa (Steve), and many more nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Leon and Evelyn Chomiak, sister Elaine, and brother Joseph.
Leona will forever be remembered as a loving and gentle soul with an adventurous spirit and a great sense of humour. Leona loved her work at Legal Aid Manitoba, where she worked for 32 years until she retired in 2017. She always saw the bright side to every situation and tried to help people however she could. Leona especially loved spending time with her friends and family, gardening at her cabin in Winnipeg Beach and cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays.
A special thanks to the Riverview Heath Centre for the exceptional care they gave my mom during her time there.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 30, 2019 at The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, located at 603 Wellington Crescent.

Condolences & Memories (17 entries)

  • Leona made every day full of sunshine and positivity when I worked with her in 1999-2000. She was one of the nicest humans I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was always consummately professional, even when we lawyers and students were having a semi-regular meltdown. She would kindly bring you a coffee and say a few comforting words and that was enough to make you get back up and get in the fight. I just adored her. I worked for Legal Aid on and off for the next few years and then took clients for my private practice. I was always excited to see her when I went to the office for any reason, even if we were not in the same department. She just had a smile that lit up a room! To her family, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Leona with so much affection and love. - Posted by: Bonnie Gembey (Former work colleague and friend) on: Dec 02, 2019

  • I worked with Leona for many years. First as an articling student and then as new lawyer. Her huge grin, positive attitude and constant support made our time together happy and memorable. She is missed. - Posted by: Peter Tonge (Co-worker) on: Dec 01, 2019

  • This is so sad. I remember her as one of the brightest lights in a very challenging articling year. You would wish there were more like her. She will be missed. - Posted by: Rich Lonstrup (Co-worker) on: Dec 01, 2019

  • She was one of the nicest people I ever met during my articling year. She was wonderful with every lawyer and articling student she dealt with. There are not a lot of constants in life during the misery that is articling after law school, but she was one of them. I was heartbroken to hear of her passing. I wish there were more people like her in the legal profession. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Rich Lonstrup (Co-worker) on: Dec 01, 2019

  • My husband, Don White, and I both articled at Legal Aid and then became staff lawyers. Leona was just so lovely and beloved by us and everyone and was truly an ally of all of us kids that had no idea what we were doing. I’m especially fond of Leona because somebody left a dog outside the criminal office and we adopted her at the urging of Leona. She did SOOO much dog sitting of Justice for us when we travelled or had our baby (actually she didn’t want to come back home with us when the baby arrived😂). I have nothing but wonderful love and good memories of her. I hope she found comfort and endless Blue Jays games!❤️ - Posted by: Clair Berland (Articling student at LAM) on: Nov 30, 2019

  • I worked with Leona at Legal Aid. She was the kind of person who made you feel like you were the best thing ever, so compassionate and kind with a mischievous sense of humour. She had a million and one stories about Winston, her daughter Trish and niece Melissa (she was so proud of them both), and the Blue Jays. She was very loved and will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to her family. - Posted by: Stacey Soldier (Co-Worker) on: Nov 30, 2019

  • We grew up together in the 1950's on Henry Ave. We lived in a 3 family terrace. We were in the middle and were friends with both families on both sides. - Posted by: Ernie Antoine (Childhood Friend) on: Nov 25, 2019

  • So sorry to hear of the passing of your mother, Trish. I worked with her for 17 years at the Ellen Street office, then the Broadway office, until I moved into administration. I know that I speak for the entire legal aid family when I say that she will be missed. - Posted by: William L Malcolm (Co worker) on: Nov 24, 2019
