WILLIAM (BILL) OLIVER

Bill Oliver passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, on Sunday, November 24, 2019, at the age of 93 years.
He was predeceased by his father Roland (1934), mother Lillian (1964), four brothers, and a sister. He is survived by his three daughters, Bev, Patti, Cheryl (Al); son David (Connie), five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Bill was born in Teulon, Manitoba on June 21, 1926 and was raised in Holland, Manitoba, where he enjoyed country life with his faithful dog Trixie. He was a proud veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in the RCNVR (Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve) at the young age of 17, after losing his brother Stanton to the war.
Bill had many careers, working for Manitoba Hydro, opening Jo Jo's Dairy in Seven Sisters, running the Sears and Oliver Agencies in Pinawa, and finally as Postmaster in Seven Sisters.
Hockey was one of Dad's passions. He coached the Virden Huskies hockey team in the 1960s. Saturday nights were dedicated to Hockey Night in Canada, and in later years he would always be seen in his Winnipeg Jets gear which he wore proudly.
We all have fond memories of Dad's home on the Lee River at Thanksgiving, as well as boating and swimming in the summer, and tobogganing in the winter.
A private family gathering was held on Friday, November 29, 2019. A private interment will be held in Brookdale Cemetery, Holland, MB in the spring.
The family would like to thank Deer Lodge Centre for their compassionate, caring treatment of Dad in his final months.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Our family and the Olivers were very close friends for approximately a decade when we all lived in Charleswood. Our visits were always entertaining and great fun. After they moved away, I hadn't seen Bill for close to 30 years, but I found him in Seven Sisters. We arranged a surprise visit for my parents, who were delighted to see him again. I later took my father to see him a few years later at his home in Lee River. Bill and his family created many happy memories for us. R.I.P. - Posted by: Bill Stevens (Friend) on: Dec 03, 2019

  • My deepest condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather. While I only got to know Bill late in his life, I truly enjoyed his wonderful sense of humour and especially the twinkle in his eyes when he was teasing someone. He surely loved his Winnipeg Jets!
