Maria Toews passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at the age of 77.
Daughter of Diedrich D. Toews and Tina E. Toews (nee Friesen), her memory is cherished by her sons, Murray Toews (wife Candace Ross), Stephen Savauge (nee Toews) (wife Rhonda O'Grady); and grandsons, Lucas and Tristan Savauge – as well as her beloved cat-companion, Shadow.
Maria was the eldest of her five siblings: Diedrich, Abe, Tina, Jim, and Helena. Though deeply rooted in tradition and family, Maria was born with an independent and adventurous spirit, rarely hesitating to express her views and share a story or a laugh. Maria is predeceased by her partners and husband Ronald Murray Savauge, David Harris and cat-companion Tiko; and by her half-brother John (and wife Tina).
She was one of the longest practicing operating room nurses in Canada and a fierce advocate for patient care. Her unconventional path, mixed with her compassion, humour, and curiosity brought her to many different places in Canada, the United States and Switzerland, and paved the way for strong and enduring bonds with those she loved.
Her final resting place will be Weidenfeld Cemetery (near Altona), close to her father and mother. A Celebration of Life is planned for late May 2020.

Words cannot express how much we miss you mother, Maria, but as she often said in later years, "So it goes…"

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • This is very late, but ... ... . I met Maria in 1980 while working in psychiatry at Health Sciences Centre. Starting out as an OR tech very young, and becoming a nurse later on, her first move and forever passion was the OR. But she was darn good at psychiatry. We remained friends until the day she died, keep in touch through all the various places we travelled. She was a very welcome slice of home and comfort while Colleen and I lived in Ottawa, just a few blocks from her home. She was so full of energy and a zest for life. Took up ballroom dancing in her 60s. Always up for a little adventure. Never short of a considered the opinion. Thoughtful beyond the call. And still working until about 2 months before she died. She was a lot to look up and live up to. Loved her dearly. Miss her every single day. Thank you for the thousands of memories and laughs. - Posted by: Barbara GrahamNorth (Friend) on: Jun 05, 2021

  • I knew Maria from HSC, many years ago, when we worked together. She truly was a woman, ahead of her time. Maria was a bright, confident nurse, strong patient advocate. She made work a fun and true learning experience. - Posted by: Marilyn Wardell (Co-worker) on: Dec 01, 2019

  • Sorry to read about the loss of your sister Maria. I have fond memories of sitting with her in my parents bakery in Morris. She would be on route to visit her parents in Lowe Farm. Our conversation was usually about her latest adventure. They were great times and we enjoyed each other's company. The extra bonus to Maria’s visit was enjoyable extended coffee breaks. Our condolences to the family. The Witts William & Judy (Friesen) - Posted by: The Witts William & Judy ( Friesen ) (Cousin) on: Dec 01, 2019

  • I worked with Maria in the 80’s at St. Boniface Operating Room. In 2017 I was able to work with Maria again at Seven Oaks. We would say when the two of us were in the room there was over 100 years OR experience. Our careers had taken similar paths, both working in Switzerland and remaining true to the OR. I am so glad we were able to reconnect after so many years. I have very fond memories and will cherish our time together talking about the remember whens. Deepest condolences. - Posted by: Donna (Friend, co-worker) on: Nov 30, 2019

  • Although Maria was two years my junior in our small Horndean school, I recall her skipping a grade or two as she was sharp as a whip. We met at teacher Elizabeth Peters party in 2004 and exchanged happenings during the last 50 years. May she rest in peace. Would love to attend the memorial service in May 2020. - Posted by: Roger Leuzinger (Former Neighbor in Horndean) on: Nov 30, 2019

  • I am thankful for the many times we spent with Maria. She had "her room" at our house and we were always welcomed at her place. We pass on our most sincere condolences to her family as we grieve Maria's passing. Lots of love. Diedrich and Helen - Posted by: Diedrich Toews (Brother) on: Nov 30, 2019

  • Aunt Maria was my favourite aunt of all time. She always made time for me and treated me special right from when I was very young. I always looked forward to her visit and loved all the stories she would tell about her operating room experiences. My deepest condolences to her sons, my cousins, Murray and Stephen. - Posted by: Marilyn O’Donnell (Niece) on: Nov 30, 2019
