Olwen, our gentle and loving mother, grandmother and wife, passed away peacefully in Grace Hospital on December 4, 2019 after a short illness resulting from complications with dementia and pneumonia. At the time of her passing she was surrounded by her loving family, who never left her side. The illness never took away her spirit or grace, and the memory of her unwavering fight for life will warm our hearts whenever we feel sad.
She is survived by Harley Navratil, her husband of 59 years; her children, Rhonda, David and Teresa; granddaughter Anne; and her brother Graham Humphreys.
The Navratil family would like to invite you to a celebration of Olwen's life, to be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 15 at St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Olwen can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to Harley, Rhonda, David, Teresa on Olwen's passing. I remember Olwen as a very generous lady who would give me fashion shoes and boots when her and Harley owned a shoe company in Winnipeg. I was a very happy teenager and also loved babysitting Rhonda, David and Teresa or just taking them to Happyland park playground. I would like to share a quote with Olwen's family. Olwen has not died, but gone away to a better place free of pain and suffering. We will see her again someday. Rest in Peace Olwen. You are loved and will be missed. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (Horace st. Neighbor & babysitter for Rhonda, David and Teresa) on: Dec 19, 2019

  • Grandma, I'm not really sure what to say, nothing I say makes this pain any easier or lighter. I miss you so much, I miss painting my nails with you, I miss how much interest you had in my art and my story. I miss baking with you, I miss talking to you. I still remember being a little kid, dressed up in a skirt and my princess veil (homemade by you from a tea towel and a safety pin that I used to pretend was a jewel) and standing up on a chair baking with you or decorating cookies. I remember the songs and jingles you'd sing around the house and how you used to pluck dead flowers off your flower pots with your nails so that they would look nice. I remember it all, I remember so much love and so much laughter, oh how we laughed. You were a beautiful soul and you raised beautiful children and those morals and values that were instilled in you were passed down through my mom to me. I love you so much and even though you are gone, you will always be here with me in my heart. Love, your granddaughter, Anne. - Posted by: Anne (Granddaughter) on: Dec 12, 2019

  • What I remember so fondly about Olwen is when they used to come and visit us on the farm in Saskatchewan when I was young and she was always so kind and such a happy person. We looked so forward to those times when they all came , Harley, Olwen, Rhonda, David and Teresa❤️ Good times. - Posted by: Laurie Lloyd (Cousin by marriage) on: Dec 11, 2019

We will be there with you in our thoughts. Sincerely, Ray and Pam - Posted by: Ray Fillion and Pam Cameron (Friends ) on: Dec 10, 2019

  • My Aunt Olwen was beautiful inside and out and I just wish that I would have spent more time with her but due to her living in Manitoba and me in BC, sadly we never did. I will miss her infectious laugh and smile and her bright spirit and cherish her memories always. Love you Jackie ❤️ - Posted by: Jackie Champion (Niece) on: Dec 09, 2019

  • I met Olwen when I became a member of the Happy Gang golf group. Every Thursday morning the Gangsters teed off & then enjoyed a nosh in the garden. Olwen was a very gentle soul and always appreciated the 'walk in the park' no matter how well she played. Olwen was humble & interested in what was going on in everyone's lives. Olwen was devoted to Harley as he was to her. I will miss seeing the two of them enjoying some fresh air from their side yard on the MacKenzie course. Our thoughts are with Harley and family as they remember Olwen's gentle spirit. With our sincere sympathy, Wendy and Dieter - Posted by: Wendy Koberstein (Happy Gang ) on: Dec 08, 2019

  • My mom had so much grace and humility. She taught me about tolerance, love, kindness, being a mother, laughter and how to laugh at oneself. I could go on an on as she had so much unconditional love and loyalty that I'm beyond grateful and lucky to have had my mom for as long as I did. I will always love her and will honor her by living the life she would've wanted me to. Us siblings will hold one another up as well as her love of her life, my father. In addition, her granddaughter, Anne will and is missing her grandmother so deeply that this shows you the impact she had on her loved ones. We will always honor you mom and grandma. You will always be looking down on us and I know you would be proud of us and we will heal in time. Thank you for everything you taught us. Love, Teresa & Anne - Posted by: Teresa Burnside (Daughter) on: Dec 07, 2019
