DAVID WALTER MACCUTCHEON

David Walter MacCutcheon passed away peacefully on December 8, 2019, surrounded by his children.
There are medical terms, but the simple story is David grew old. At 92, a body that used to carry him on endless walks and bike rides finally started to fail. But he was able to live at home until his last days, supported by his children and visiting care workers. That Churchill Drive home, and the Riverview community around it, were important to him. He grew up in Verdun, Quebec and he always enjoyed reminiscing about his childhood there and happy summers spent in the Laurentians. His adult life, though, was spent in Winnipeg. He married there, raised five children, and with his late wife Adell, saw that family expand to a raucous mob of grandchildren and pets. David was old school, as his kids might say. He was an only child raised to be proper and well-mannered by his beloved parents. He'd look at his boisterous girls both bemused and terrified as they progressed through their teens and twenties, but also viewed them with great love and affection, as he did his only son.
David spent much of his working life as a draftsman for the Manitoba government, producing the engineering drawings that led to provincial highways and the Red River Floodway. You'd see that precision and detail in everything he did around the house. He liked to joke, story-tell and laugh - a trait obvious in his children. Faith and community were central to David's life, particularly after he retired. David was a fixture around All Saints Church, where he contributed what must have been thousands of volunteer hours. Even as his body started to fail him, he'd find a way to be there on Sundays, and he will be missed there.
David is survived by his children, Bev (Brent), Joy (Dave), Sue, Bruce and Joan (Nestor); as well as his grandchildren in Winnipeg and all the way to Toronto and Nova Scotia, Garry (Ashley), Scott, Michael, Claire (Davis), Hannah, Alec and Katie.
A celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. in the Pavilion at Assiniboine Park.
Donations in memory of David may be made to: All Saints Church, 175 Colony Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1W2, phone 204-786-4765.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Wow, what a fantastic eulogy, precise and flattering, the part where "he'd look at his boisterous girls both bemused and terrified as they progressed through their teens and twenties, but also viewed them with great love and affection, as he did his only son" is how I would have described him...but I couldn't have articulated it that well. He was a good man and he was a proper man. - Posted by: John Sutherland (Old acquaintance) on: Aug 08, 2021
