MARY IRENE FENSKE
(nee LYTHGOE)
Mom has now rejoined her beloved parents, Irene and Jim Lythgoe, her dear aunt Edna Broome and her three adored Scottish terriers, Lady, Maggie and Aran. She is dearly loved and eternally missed by her daughter Mary Fenske Jr., her sister Kathleen Carlow, and many relatives and friends.
Mom was born in Winnipeg in 1941. After graduating from Tec Voc High School, she worked for Winnipeg Police Service, before leaving to raise a family. After many years as a devoted full-time mother, Mom returned to work in the field of geriatric health care, retiring form Charleswood Care Centre in 2008.
Mom enjoyed travelling, visiting Asia, Alaska, Las Vegas, Florida and various other destinations. She was a subscriber to PTE and loved attending the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Emblematic of her compassion for others, she supported Siloam Mission for many years. Mom never met a stranger and will be remembered for her humour, artistic talent and love of books. Throughout her life, Mom put others before herself and was a selfless, determined advocate for anyone who needed her.
Mom's greatest gifts to the world were loyalty, courage and conviction. Mom faced her final battle with cancer with characteristic grit and determination, as she had all life's previous challenges. Throughout her illness Mom never gave up, never bowed to self-pity, never wavered in her concern for others. Although she has passed into the next world, Mom remains victorious in her tenacious dedication to life, which never faltered.
Special thanks are extended to Mom's GP Dr. Grant Goldberg, Clinic 2 at CancerCare Manitoba, as well as the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their excellent care.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service Friday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m., both at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, Rev. Mary Holmen officiating.
"Hard pressed on every side, but not crushed: perplexed but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." Cor. 4:8, 9

I am so very sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I met Mary when she came to work at CPL Poseidon. We quickly became friends and spent many hours working together. She participated in many CPL girl's activities outside of the office - dinners, murder mystery nights, tacky parties. She was so much fun. She was a lovely, caring and compassionate person and she loved her family very much. She will be missed by many. My condolences to Mary Jr. and extended family. - Posted by: Joan Jarvie (J.J.) I would like to extend my deepest condolences to read about Mary's passing and to her beloved daughter Mary...we would be known to each other as the 3 Mary's in the hospital unit. I won't forget when I was transferred to another unit and we held each others hands along with a wee tear to say so long. We shared a few giggles as well as some very intelligent conversations. The bond between mother and daughter was incredible and so very endearing. May you rest in eternal peace Mary. I'll never forget you. - Posted by: Rosemary Wade (Neighborly friend in St Boniface Hospital) on: Dec 17, 2019

Sorry to hear of Mary's passing. Although I didn't know her personally, I read above that she was a niece of my mom's, Edna Broome. I know that Edna had a brother living in Winnipeg but didn't know of any other family there. I would love to get in touch and see how we are related, you can find me on Facebook if anyone is interested. My deepest condolences, Scott Broome. - Posted by: Scott Broome (Cousin?) on: Dec 17, 2019

I have been very privileged to be part of the Mary's life these past 20+ years. At every celebration we shared laughs and joy. Mary Sr's presence will be extremely missed by my family and myself. My daughter came to look upon Mary Sr. as a grandmother figure and loved spending time with her. My heart breaks for Mary Jr. and her family. Our deepest condolences Love Karen, Alex & Simone - Posted by: Karen Krasicki (Family friend ) on: Dec 16, 2019

I was so sorry to see the obit in today’s paper and send my condolences to Mary and family. I met Mary when I was 18 and started working in Traffic Division at the Winnipeg Police department. We became fast friends and I was honoured when she asked me to be a bridesmaid when she married. I left for a different employment opportunity and later she left when young Mary was born. We met often for years and then our lives became busy and we kept in touch only through our annual Christmas card vowing to get together and never doing it. I was on my way to mail the Xmas card today when I saw the paper this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with you and am sorry I cannot attend her service as I will be away. - Posted by: Arlene Jones (Friend) on: Dec 14, 2019
