LETA MCDOWELL

Peacefully, one week before her 94th birthday, Leta passed away rejoining her sisters and many, many friends.
Born December 17, 1925, on the family farm at Sperling, MB. Second child to Daisy (Sumpter) and John Wurmnest.
Leta was predeceased by her parents, Daisy and John; her sisters, Delores (Jack) and Sadie (Rene); sister-in-law Connie; and dear friend Les Sundell. She is survived by her brother Terry Wurmnest. Also left to mourn are Leta's children, Jim (Rosemary) and Kelly (Clint); grandchildren. Morgan (Jamie), Patrick (Jodi) and Tracey (Alex); and great-grandchildren, William, Axel and Otto. Also nieces and nephews and many friends.
Growing up on the farm, Leta attended the one room Tremont school and high school in Sperling. She went on to Business College in Winnipeg where she made many lifelong friends.
A gifted writer from a very young age, Leta was known for her poetry and letter writing. Her words were always special however one received them. Also a history buff regarding history in all forms, be it personal family or ancient Kings and Queens, people knew "just ask Leta".
Settling near Sanford, Leta became well involved with the community. One of the founding members of the Sanford Legion Ladies Auxiliary, she became the first Life Member. Active with the Ferndale Church, she was always willing to play music or help out with the Ladies Aid. Whether it was gardening, curling or making the jams and jellies she had perfected, Leta was never idle. Her love of music and God given talent for playing the piano were always enjoyed by people at sing songs and gatherings throughout her years. Never hesitating to play all the good oldies, Mom needed no music at all!!
Throughout her life, Leta was well liked and known as a friendly, happy person. Always dressed to look her best, never forgetting her hat and earrings. She cherished her Canadian home wherever she lived over her years.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Kelly and Jim....please accept our heartfelt sympathy on your mother's passing. I. Judy (nee Rhynard) have so many wonderful memories of your mother. Always a smile on her face that would light up the room and her love of music touched us all at Ferndale school and church. Her fashion sense was special....church service in Ferndale always a hat and jewelry....lovely memories when I think of her today. - Posted by: Judy and Vick Dusik (Long time neighbors and friends) on: Dec 21, 2019

  • Sorry to hear of the passing of this elegant lady. Condolences to everyone in her family. - Posted by: Glenn Peckover (Sperling friend) on: Dec 16, 2019

  • Leta came into my life when she met my father Les Sundell. She quickly fit right into the Sundell clan and she and Dad had a great life together. Leta came out to Pinawa many times for visits and one day while fishing, she caught a master angler Jackfish -she was in her mid 80s at the time. She received a Master Angler certificate and was so proud of it. She was a good friend to me (and my husband Harve) and she will be truly missed. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Betty Ostash (step daughter) on: Dec 14, 2019
