JOHN PETER GUGULYN
June 27, 1935 - December 4, 2019

On December 4, 2019, as snow was falling softly, peacefully our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away surrounded by his family.
Living a life of notable achievements, none were cherished more by him than his love for his family. John is survived by the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Velda; his four children, Darcy (Tim), Derrick (Karen), Debbie (Brent), Darren (Leanne), 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Joan (Charlie) Strachan and Lillian Duncan; brothers-in-law, Bob (Helen) Dahl and Bruce (Joanne) Dahl, and their families.
Born in Winnipeg where his business acumen and love for labour relations led him to be instrumental in the forming of the CAIMAW Union. His expertise was recognized by Flyer Industries, where his leadership, negotiation and administrative skills led him into management. He spent the last 25 years of his career in the Potash industry with IMC and PCS. John's career achievements were notable, and with Velda, they travelled the world and they built many relationships during this time.
John and Velda's final move was to Edmonton in 2001, where they retired closer to their children. John was an avid golfer, and spent many Sundays golfing with family and friends. Dad loved having family visits and was especially proud of all his grandchildren and their accomplishments.
He will be remembered with much love for his strong principles, values, great advice and mostly for his kindness and generosity. You will be missed every day Dad, as you were "our rock" and always there for us.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to John's doctors and caregivers. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff for the compassionate care he received at the U of A and the Misericordia Hospitals.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 4:00 p.m. on January 11, 2020 at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810 34 Ave. N.W., Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cross Cancer Institute or a charity of your choice.
