DORIS LYNN FILBERT
Still feeling the heavy weight of the loss of her high school sweetheart, Barry John Filbert, on December 21, 2015, and their 58 years of marriage, she faced the cancer the way she did all obstacles: with a 'one step at a time' patience, determination, humility and logic. We held her hand through it.
Survived by her daughter Evelyn; her four sons, Barrett, Parris, Leigh and Elliot; her grandson Maximilian and her granddaughter Arlo, she inspired in us the ways of craftsmanship and creative expression, the need for science and problem solving, the importance of music and art, and the confidence of letting her children decide their own ways through life. Her two adorable cats, Jack and Rusty, have moved comfortably to a new home together.
Her father Ross Cuddie, a railroad pipe fitter, enjoyed teaching her skills that girls at the time weren't exposed to; this set the standard for how she treated and encouraged the people in her world, regardless of who they were or where they came from.
She took great pride in being on the first-year squad of the Bomberettes, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' cheerleaders. She designed and made her own clothing in high school, being then invited to study fashion in New York City, only to have that quashed for her because, "Winnipeg girls don't do that." While raising a crowded household of kids, she completed her organic chemistry degree. By mid-life she was active in provincial and national politics. In 1997, she and Barry retired to the family cottage they built themselves 26 years earlier in Spruce Bay, north of Gimli.
Lynn takes with her a lifetime of experience and anecdotes, quips and cautionary tales, and stories of our childhood and her marriage that she didn't nearly have enough time to tell us about. She will live on in the memories and character of her children and the lessons we learned to make our worlds better. Hopefully she can say hi to Dad now, hers and ours.
We thank her and will always love her.
Memorial donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

My condolences to Lynn’s family. I have fond memories of visiting her childhood family home on Lansdowne Ave. I also recall a fun vacation we had together at Winnipeg Beach. My Mom and Aunt Dorothy has rented a cottage there. Lynn and I would go to the beach everyday and I recall her teaching me handstands in the water. Evelyn and Siblings, I miss the coffee breaks at Luther Home with you and your dad. I knew him better then your mom. We are now the senior generation as my dad Ed also passed in November. I found an old picture of your grandpa Johann Filbert if you would like to have it. May the peace of the Lord be with all of you during this season and into the new year. - Posted by: Kathy Murdoch (Deibert) (Cousin) on: Dec 22, 2019
