HELEN GERTRUDE NOKES
She was predeceased by her husband Frank.
Helen was born in Winnipeg and grew up in River Heights, with one year in Regina. She married Frank Nokes in 1953, and in 1961 she left her work at City Hall, to raise her children.
Helen was a kind, supportive mother and wife. She enjoyed her volunteer work teaching swimming to young people with handicaps. In the mid-1980s, she returned to working outside the home, this time as a sales clerk at Eaton's until she retired.
Helen was a sporty person, who swam and hiked regularly, and cross-country skied and cycled. Helen also enjoyed reading, gardening and time with her family. Helen treasured her visits with her granddaughter Vanessa at home and at her daughter's in the US. In her later years she was an active member of St. Aidan's Church in Winnipeg.
Helen lived in her own house until 2015, when she moved in with her family in BC. We will miss her strength of character, her humour, joy and friendship.
She leaves to mourn her brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Linda Weitzel, her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Kevin O'Brien, granddaughter Vanessa O'Brien, and her son and daughter-in-law David and Frances Nokes.
Profound thanks to the staff at Trillium Lodge and to companions, Linda Howard and Kathleen Lario.

I had the privilege of getting to know Helen in these recent years. Despite her declining memory, we shared many wonderful moments. Helen was a kind and thoughtful and encouraging woman and I was blessed to be her companion and friend. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences to all of Helen's family. - Posted by: Linda Howard (Companion) on: Dec 29, 2019
