OLGA DILAY
1916 – 2019

Olga Dilay passed away peacefully at 103 years of age on October 26, 2019, at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg.
Olga was born in Winnipeg's North End in the house that her father built and lived there for the next 86 years. She loved the rich cultural blend of the North End and frequently talked about her experiences there: visiting various grocery and retail shops along the vibrant Selkirk Avenue, outdoor skating at the Exhibition Grounds, indoor roller skating wherever/whenever she could, summer trips on the Moonlight Express train to the wonderful dance hall at Grand Beach, always careful to catch the last train back to the city so as not to miss work the next day. Olga spent most of her working years at a job she truly enjoyed, as a federal civil servant at Canada Manpower. This allowed her the time and means to indulge her passion for travel and experiencing other cultures... and travel she did!!
Olga was a member of the North Centennial Seniors Association for over 30 years where she could swim, exercise, and thoroughly enjoy life well into her 90s. She had season tickets to the Winnipeg Symphony, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and was a great supporter of the arts. She was an enthusiastic Blue Bomber fan and had season tickets to the games for many years, even attending a Grey Cup game in Toronto with her dear friend Vicky Peters/Elliot. She would have loved to see the Bombers finally win the Grey Cup again this year.
Olga is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Andrew Dilay; her brothers, Stan (Tekla) Dilay, Walter (Mary) Dilay; sister Mary (John) Chekryn; nephew Michael Chekryn. She is survived by nephew Andrew (Aloma) Dilay; niece Christine (Vern) Warkentin; niece-in-law Joanne Chekryn/Reimer and their families.
Olga was a kind, caring and spiritual woman who was devoted to her church, Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. She also loved the Liturgies at Holy Family Home each Wednesday and Sunday. She was always interested in the thoughts and feelings of others around her. Her warm, open-minded personality earned her many friends. We will miss her dearly.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Holy Family Home for their kindness and excellent care during the last years of Olga's life.
A Memorial Liturgy will be held on January 4, 2020, with family and friends.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Truly a great loss. Such a wonderful woman. LOVED her bingo games that I helped run. She also was delighted when I would bring my little dog for visits. I feel blessed that I was able to see her the day before she passed. Her last words to me were "God bless you". - Posted by: Deb Winterburn (Volunteer at Holy Family Home) on: Dec 28, 2019
