DR. WALTER (WALLY) WOLF BLOCH
January 13, 1930 - January 2, 2020

Dr. Wally Bloch passed away peacefully at Riverview, surrounded by his loving family.
Wally was born in Pietersberg, South Africa to Boris and Rachel Bloch, and grew up with his two sisters, Ethel and Helen. Wally went on to study dentistry in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. He met Susana Leistner, from Porto Allegre, Brazil, while visiting Israel in 1958. Three months after meeting they got married and moved back to England to start a life together. After initially living in London, England and then Johannesburg, South Africa, they immigrated to Canada in 1978, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Wally retired from practice in 2018, at the age of 88, being one of the oldest practicing dentists in Manitoba.
Wally was a gentleman and a true mensch, and was loved by all who met him. He made everyone he met feel special. He only spoke kindly of people, and was a role model to all who had the privilege to know him. The world would be a much better place if we could all be little more like Wally! He will sorely be missed by his family, friends and patients.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Susana Leistner Bloch, his adoring children, Daniela Jacobsohn and Anthony Bloch, granddaughters, Maxine and Sarah Jacobsohn, Rebecca and Megan Bloch, son-in-law Eric Jacobsohn, and daughter-in-law Alyssa Bloch.
The family wish to thank the care teams at St. Boniface Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba, the home care and palliative care programs; and the wonderful team in the 3E Palliative Care ward at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation (www.rhc.mb.ca).
Funeral services will be held at Adas Yeshurun Herzlia Congregation, 620 Brock St., Winnipeg, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. This will be followed by a graveside service at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery at approximately 2:15 p.m. The meal of condolence will be held at Herzlia Synagogue at 3:30 p.m. Shiva times and location will be announced at the service.

  • My condolences to the entire Bloch family. A truly wonderful example of a human being will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I was a patient of his for 40 years from his time at Portage Avenue Dental and then his move to Norwod Dental. He was the consummate professional and interesting conversationist....always put his patients at ease. Will miss the visits and the conversations. Will greatly miss this outstanding man. - Posted by: George bellerose (Patient) on: Feb 17, 2020

  • We were deeply, deeply saddened to have just learned of Walter’s passing. My wife and I were patients of Walter’s for almost 40 years. Walter was always the consummate gentleman in every definition of the word. He pretty much adopted his patients as extended family members and even though I’ve never met his wife or children, I feel I know them all very closely. Without question, the best dentist I’ve ever had and he will be missed. R.I.P. Walter. - Posted by: Dan Kirk (Patient ) on: Feb 04, 2020

  • I was blessed to have Dr Bloch as my dentist for 15 years. When he announced his retirement, I was heartbroken. I had hoped he would be my dentist for many more years. He had such a gentle, tender, and kind manner and I always felt relaxed with him. He was also incredibly competent and I always knew that I was in good hands. I will miss him terribly. Rest In Peace, my friend. - Posted by: Choo Choo Rosenbloom (Patient ) on: Jan 05, 2020

  • I was a patient of Dr. Bloch’s for many years. He was an extremely kind, polite and gentle man. The perfect dentist! I remember calling Dr. Bloch at home one Saturday back in the early 1990s after I had an unfortunate encounter with a hockey stick. Dr. Bloch graciously met me at his office and stabilized my front tooth so I could “get through the weekend”. Then he did a marvellous job giving me my smile back! A true professional! - Posted by: Len Dacombe (Patient) on: Jan 04, 2020
