BARRY (SUEY MIN) CHAN

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barry Chan, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, at his home in Toronto, ON, on December 22, 2019.
Barry was predeceased by his wife, Joyce (nee Ng), in 2007. He will be greatly missed by his children, Gail (Roland), Alan, Lorraine (Rick), Mel (Rebecca), and Vincent (Xiaomin). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Anson, Jason, Adrienne, Derek, Jordan, Alexis, Leah, Zoe, Lionel and Louise; and great-grandchildren: Clark and Anika.
Barry was born in Taishan, China on October 16, 1923. He met and married Joyce in Taishan in 1947. Barry immigrated to Canada in 1950 to make a better future for his family. After eight years of working long hours at his father's restaurant, Chan's Cafe, he was re-united with his wife, Joyce and daughter Gail in 1958. Their son Alan was born a year later, and shortly afterwards, there were three more additions to the family, Lorraine, Mel and Vincent. His early years, like most new immigrant families, were filled with challenges, adapting to the new culture and learning a new language.
In the exciting 1960s, Barry was the assistant manager for both the second floor dining room and the third floor night club at Chan's Café at Portage and Main in downtown Winnipeg. Barry was involved in hiring acts for the Chan's Moon Room and gave Winnipeg's fledgling music industry a boost. Several prominent Canadian musicians including Ray St. Germain and Chad Allan played there frequently. When Chan's Café closed in the mid 1970s, Barry became an entrepreneur, successfully opening China Garden Restaurant in Fort Richmond. He again worked long and late hours. He wished to see all his children become successful in his adopted country. All graduated from university, working in various professions throughout the country. In his retirement years, Barry quite often could be seen visiting with his daughter Lorraine and his friends at the St. Vital Mall. He moved to Toronto to the Chartwell Grenadier retirement home in his final years, where he made many new friends and was able to visit with his son Vincent on a daily basis and other children and grandchildren frequently.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., at Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., 204-925-1120. www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Barry, I will always remember you. When I was a young child Carmel, Caroline and I came to the city to stay for summer holidays with Aunt Mary and Uncle Harry on Yale. You were so kind and patient. One night at supper you put a string of pearls around my neck. I treasured those pearls. I wish you a happy journey .
