STEVE KYTAYCHUK
1932 - 2019

Peacefully, on Friday, December 20, 2019, Steve passed away at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 87, with family by his side.
Steve was predeceased by his wife Eileen in 2011. He was the youngest and final surviving member of the family that included his parents, Sebastian and Christina, and his siblings, Frank (Sophie), Adeline (Stanley), Josie (Steve) and Karl (Anne).
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Penny (Barry), son Darryl and daughter Susan (Steve); three grandsons, Tyrell (Haylea), Michael and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Jayden and Carter; sister-in-law Delores Darowany; and nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.
In 1932, Steve was born in his family home located on the homestead across the road from the community hall in Polson, MB. He often shared stories of growing up on the farm, his first jobs of cleaning the hall, or having people park their horses in the family barn so they could attend winter dances. Steve worked several jobs as a young man that included lumber jacking in Ontario and working for Building Products in Winnipeg. He spent the majority of his career as a valued and trustworthy worker for Western Messenger where his red truck was well-known.
As a young man, Steve enjoyed city and country dances and met his wife, Eileen at the Jolly Wally Ranch in Malonton, MB. His greatest joy was that of being a husband and father, a role in which he was strong, steadfast and always reliable especially in the most difficult of times. As a child, Steve lamented missing out on relationships with his own grandparents. A reversal of fortune was in store for him as Steve became a greatly involved grandparent in all his grandchildren's lives - a role he owned enthusiastically.
Steve's favourite pastimes were betting on the horses at the track and gardening. He also kept tabs on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers since the days of Kenny Ploen and was always up for a conversation on where the team could improve. Steve also had a passion for music and played the violin. Regular visitors of the Kytaychuk household were familiar with the blaring music of Saturday night ethnic Ukrainian Polka Party on the radio. Steve also talked of loving "live orchestra music" complete with an accordion, of course. He also was very sociable and enjoyed visits and laughter with family, numerous friends and neighbours.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Kytaychuk, Steve Johnson, Dan Duane, Dean Sly, Kerry Walker and Kurt Walker.
Father Isador will be officiating a Celebration of Life service for Steve on January 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Prayers will be held on Friday, January 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

  • Mr. Kytaychuk (Steve) was father to a lifelong friend of mine Penny. When she called to inform me her father had passed I was deeply saddened. I met Mr. Kytaychuk multiple times over the years and he was a very kind and loving person. He touched the lives of all who knew him. I know he meant the world to his children; Penny, Darryl and Susan and all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. My heart and prayers go out to all his family and friends. He will be missed. • I got to know Steve when I moved in next door 28 yrs ago. Being the “new kid on the block”, he instantly befriended me, mentored me and just became a really great friend. I loved all our chats and stories about life we used to have while hanging over the fence or us all sitting around by your garage telling stories in English/Ukrainian. I was able to confide in you about anything and everything. You were so understanding. Those are all valued memories, and so many things you taught me about home ownership and one of the most dependable and trusting people I have ever met. He was my 2nd Dad as my own Dad lived far away. I hope I was as good a friend as well. I respected you so much over the yrs as I got to know you. I loved you truly as my Best Friend and Neighbour. Steve I pray God to give your soul true rest and now you are with Eileen again. God Speed my Dear Friend. - Posted by: Shirley Dadey-Johnson (Friend) on: Jan 04, 2020
