IRENE FRATER
(nee RATHWELL)

Irene Frater (nee Rathwell) passed away peacefully, on December 24, 2019, at the age of 88.
Irene was predeceased by her daughter Monica, and her brothers, Theo, Gordon, Wallace and Ray.
She is survived by her husband Jack, son-in-law Michael, and grandchildren, Haley, Carly and Chad. Irene will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, her extended family, and many friends.
Irene had a great love of sports and was a champion basketball player in high school. During her life she enjoyed cross-country skiing, canoeing and cycling. She was a faithful gym member up until five years ago.
Irene loved to travel and lived four years in Germany with her husband Jack, during which time they visited many European countries including Russia and Africa. Since then, many vacations were spent in Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Irene's great love was the beach, "Grand Beach", and is where she spent all of her summers. She enjoyed gardening, cycling, dancing, suntanning and friends. Irene's wiener roasts were legendary.
In Irene's later years, she was totally devoted to her three grandchildren. This was the love that kept her going.
A funeral for Irene will be held January 14, 2020, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of cards and flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a pet rescue of your choice.

  • Irene was a person who’s bright smile lit up a room. Always impeccably dressed and always looked younger than her years.
