Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2020Offer Condolences or Memory
AIDA MARIA AMARAL
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her sons, Rui and Marc, her sister Manuela; four grandchildren, Rebeka, Stefan, Philip and Genevieve, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Joao, her son John, and her sisters, Maria de Lurdes and Maria do Carmo.
Aida was born in Sao Miguel, in the Azores, Portugal and immigrated to Canada with her immediate family in 1973. Unfailingly loving, and beloved by her family, Aida will be
missed for her kindness and positive attitude to life. Always ready with a smile, she had an easy capacity for laughter, making even
troubled times tolerable for those in her care. In order to help support her family, she worked several part-time jobs over the years, including an arduous piece-work sewing of heavy winter clothing late into the night, an activity that exacted a difficult physical toll. Aida enjoyed the outdoors and was an
accomplished gardener, coaxing an amazing quantity and variety of vegetables and
flowers from an often tiny plot in her backyard. She enjoyed spending an occasional day at the beach, and later in life came to enjoy a morning or afternoon of fishing.
Nevertheless, she was an avid animal lover and conscientious caregiver, and animals of all types found in her a source of joy and comfort. For some time, she was adept at raising baby canaries, feeding them,
patiently, small morsels of food by way of a toothpick, until they were fully grown and strong. Her pets: dogs, cats, and guinea pigs, always showed her a devotion far beyond the norm, bespeaking the love and care that they received. Aida was also a superlative cook and baker, and would often prepare the most amazing culinary feasts to celebrate special occasions and days. She always had
delectable goodies prepared for all occasions, which made visiting her a memorable and joyous experience. She will be remembered as a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and friend.
The family wishes to thank and express their appreciation to the wonderful staff at St. Joseph's Residence for the exceptional care that they provided.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., on Friday, January 17, 2020, with Fr. Gerry Ward officiating. For those wishing to offer condolences, the family will be present at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
Entombment will follow at Assumption
Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
