JEAN JOSEPH GERALD GOBEIL

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Joseph Gérald Gobeil, on December 31, 2019, at 84 years of age, at the Morris Hospital in Morris, MB.
He was predeceased by his wife Annette (née Manaigre); his parents, Gérard and Ernestine (Sicotte); his brothers, Jacques, Aurèle, Raymond and his sister Rachelle (the late Jacques.)
He leaves to mourn his children, Nicole (Paul), Lydia and David; grandchildren, Gabriel (Kerri) and Kaelan (Joëlle); his brother Fernand (Lise); sisters, Monique (the late Murray), Alice (the late Ken), Lise (Omer) and numerous relatives and friends.
Gérald graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1964 with a Doctorate in Medicine and practiced for 45 years at the Seine Medical Centre in Ste. Anne, MB. Revered by his patients, he was a dedicated physician whose door was always open to those in need. Humble about his achievements, he stood as a pillar in his community to which he contributed countless hours. Gérald was known as a "bon-vivant," a gifted storyteller and for his sense of humour. He had a passion for music and singing and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at the church in Ste. Anne, MB, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the Villa Youville Pavillon, 208 Central Avenue, Ste. Anne, MB. Interment of the ashes will occur at a later date.
The Gobeil family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Morris Hospital and also to all friends and family for their love and support.
Donations in Gérald's memory can be made to the Martin Courcelles Trust Fund, canadahelps.org.

Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • It is with great sadness I, of late, was informed of the passage of Dr Gobeil. First I met him as a great friend and was not even aware he was a Doctor. But he made some snap decisions concerning my health and advised me as he was already retired. For a hobby he loved wood working and restored a piano. But his greater love was making recordings of vocal music. He had a great sense of humor and I often visited him . After his own health was failing, he had moved to St Malo. He lives on in my memory as one of the great persons I met. My Condolences to Nicole and family. - Posted by: Louis Baltus (Friend ) on: Mar 09, 2020

• I was sad to read about Dr. Gobeil's death. As a secondary school and university student, for several years, I worked part-time with him and the other physicians at the clinic in Ste-Anne, including my father, Dr. Doyle. A generous, good-humoured and hard-working physician, Dr. Gobeil was always a pleasure to assist during my days as a receptionist at the clinic. My husband and I fondly remember how beautifully Dr. Gobeil sang at our wedding, even agreeing to interpret Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" in French, Spanish and English at our request. En 2015, il a aussi chanté aux funérailles de mon père, un adieu touchant à son collègue et ami. Et maintenant, c'est l'heure de son adieu. Au revoir, cher Dr. Gobeil, et que votre âme repose en paix! - Posted by: Rosemary Doyle-Morier (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2020

  • My condolences to Nicole, Paul, Gabriel, Lydia, Kaelan, and David. I met Nicole when she was in grade 1 when I moved across the street. We became best friends. I have many memories camping at West Hawk lake with the family. Dr. Gobeil loved boating and fishing. I learned to water ski and fish in their boat. I also learned a lot about campfire cooking from Dr. Gobeil. He was jolly and fun loving with a great sense of humour. He made me feel like part of the family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. ...my second family. - Posted by: Cindy Lévesque (Friend and neighbor ) on: Jan 20, 2020

  • I have always held Dr. Gobeil dear in my heart. He was my Dr. for the first 20 years of my life. He was a very dear friend of my mother. I was also an employee of the Seine Medical Centre for a few years and learnt just how caring and professional a man he was. He has certainly earned his spot in heaven! My sympathies to the Gobeil family, especially to Nicole. - Posted by: Lise Champagne (Former patient, former employee and former neighbor) on: Jan 20, 2020

  • I remember him as a genuine, honest and fun loving gentleman. My first experience was waterskiing behind his aeroliner boat at Westhawk lake. With Nicole in tow we both flipped. Receiving a ski to the chest. Dr. Gobeil quickly assessed my injuries. "Jeune homme tu a brisé trois cotes, ça va faire mal pour sept semaine." He threw me back in the water and added. "J'irai moin vite" That man always made me smile. - Posted by: Raymond Gosselin (Friend) on: Jan 19, 2020

  • I first met Dr Gobeil when he interned at St Boniface. Odd that of all the interns I've met over the years, he's one of the few I remember. He was indeed a gentleman.
