JOHN STEVE (JOHNNYKA) SOGI JR.
June 2, 1952 - January 15, 2020

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts, we mourn the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother and nephew, John Sogi Jr. at the age of 67 years.
He was predeceased by his mother Ilona; grandparents, Stephen and Ilona (Anyu) and John and Elizabeth.
John leaves behind his father John Sr.; his sister Sylvia (Jeffrey) of Royal Oak, Michigan; uncle Stephen and aunt Katerina of Zurich, Ontario; cousins, Michele (David) and family of Goderich, Ontario; Peter (Karen) and family of Corbeil, Ontario; family in Hungary; Serbia; family and friends in Winnipeg; and those who cared for John within the DASCH and New Directions - Teragy family.
John (affectionately known as Johnnyka by his family) was born in Winnipeg. John resided at the DASCH group home in St. Vital. Unable to communicate verbally, John was very articulate in showing everyone what he needed or wanted, especially his beloved cup of coffee. Visits home with his family always included a special meal, his favourite, dessert. Hungarian was spoken frequently within the family and many times when John was asked to do something in Hungarian he clearly understood and followed through. Although it was difficult for John to express his love, if you asked him for a hug, he was happy to wrap his arms around you. John lit up every room he entered, and you definitely knew when he arrived. His boundless energy was quick in every sense of the word. If you turned around for a split second, he could be gone. He kept everyone on their toes.
He enjoyed his time at the DASCH cabin in Winnipeg Beach, weekly coffee and dining outings, and loved his Day Program - Teragy. John had the opportunity to travel by train with his DASCH family to Calgary. We soon learned that for John, travel was not "his cup of coffee." He felt most comfortable in familiar surroundings.
This morning, we are asking all our family and friends to enjoy their cup of coffee, (or beverage of choice), knowing Johnnyka is smiling and enjoying his coffee with you.
Johnnyka, you will be walking with your Mother hand in hand. She loved you so much. For those of us left behind, you will forever be a shining light within our hearts.
A celebration of John's life is planned for this summer.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at DASCH (River Road) and the staff at New Directions Day Program - Teragy (Regent Avenue) who assisted with John's care and enabled him to live a life filled with endless possibilities.
In lieu of cards or flowers, we ask that a donation be made in John Sogi Jr.'s memory to DASCH Foundation, 117 Victor Lewis Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3P 1J6, www.dasch.mb.ca

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • John and I spent many hours together in the early 90's in his home as well as many days spent together. I have treasured memories of sunday dinners with his parents, we worked together on an eskimo kiss surprise for his mom to help show her how much he really enjoyed those nights. I was sorry to hear of his passing but I take solace in knowing he is with his mother again. We sure had some great times. Thanks for the memories John. - Posted by: Jody Bogacki (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2020

  • Beautifully written, Sylvia. My condolences to you, your dad and Jeffrey. Know that Johnny is with your mom. Love Janice - Posted by: Janice Perkins (Friend) on: Jan 25, 2020
