Born November 21, 1924, to Jacob and Helen Goertzen, Helen attended Steinbach College as well as Prairie Bible College and then she took her nurses training in B.C. At the age of 25, she was accepted to go to Panama with Gospel Missionary Union, now Avant Missions. She worked together with Linda Reimer for 32 years. During that time they pioneered a bible camp for children, then moved to the west coast where property was purchased to pioneer a Nursing Clinic. They tirelessly provided medical and spiritual care for local people. Helen loved the people of Panama and found joy in serving them. She enjoyed engaging with Spanish speaking people in their own language.
After Linda retired, Helen found it more difficult but stayed to work for three more years. Upon 35 years of work in Panama, she retired in an apartment in the St. James area of Winnipeg. She rejoined her efforts with Linda and together they had a Bible Study and visitation ministry. When Linda died, Helen grieved the loss of this lifelong friend and ministry co-worker, yet she continued to minister to others with a joyful spirit. In 2014 she was taken to Grace Hospital and after three months it was important that she move to Middle Church Senior Complex. She adjusted well, making friends with staff and residents with her infectious love for people. Helen blessed countless people over her lifetime and she joyfully anticipated being in heaven with her Savior and Lord when her time of service was complete. She will always hold a precious place in our hearts.
A celebration of her life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Avant Ministries, 2121 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg, R2G 1P8
Thank you, Helen, for your unconditional and cheerful love. We miss you, love you and will never forget you. The Goertzen Family.
