LILLIAN COPPER DOYLE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lillian Copper Doyle at home on January 26, 2020, at the age of 97.
Lillian was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. John Thomas Doyle, and son-in-law George Hosie. Lillian is survived by her daughters, Maura, Patricia and Shannon (Stan); granddaughter Siobhan (Jordan), and great-grandchildren, Luke and Una.
Lillian was an undeniable force of nature. We knew her as "Copper" and "the chief", a woman who loved her family and put family before everything else.
Lillian was born in County Mayo, Ireland. Lillian met the love of her life in London during the Second World War, a young and handsome soldier from Prince Edward Island. The two quickly fell in love and after the war, they settled in Canada to raise their three girls, Maura, Patricia and Shannon.
Arriving on the prairies, Lillian soon became known as a fierce advocate for children and workers' rights and dedicated her career to ensuring they were respected. Never one to shy away from a fight, Copper is remembered as the toughest gal this side of the Atlantic.
Siobhan, her only grandchild, kept her grandparents young at heart with their many camping adventures at Falcon Lake. Lillian experienced the great joy of spending time with her delightful great-grandchildren, Luke and Una.
A special thank you to Dr. Casey Woo and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Palliative, and Community Care Programs and especially to all the home care workers and nurses who cared for Lillian.

Lillian, our love, we love you and miss you.

Rest now, Copper.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Friday, January 31, 2020, at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lillian's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I met Lillian through my friend and fellow cat lover Patricia who invited my husband Steven and I to spend an evening at her home just down the street from where we lived in Winnipeg. What I remember of Lillian was that she still had a lot of life in her and was so captivating. She was funny and sweet. I offer my condolences to the family and mostly to Patricia since she is the person I know and was searching for on Google when I came across this sad announcement. - Posted by: Carol Simon (Acquaintance ) on: Dec 20, 2020

  • My love to the Doyle sisters and extended family at this time. While I don't know Patricia and only met Copper once... Copper did a fine job with Shannon and Maura. God Bless - Posted by: Michael Monk (Friend of the family) on: Feb 01, 2020

  • We met Copper in the mid 70,s. We came to Winnipeg from Belfast. Copper was such a lovely lady. I (Betty) did her hair for many years on Lakewood Blvd, and remained friends. Condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Betty & Grant Rodgers (Friend ) on: Jan 31, 2020

  • The first time I met Mrs. Doyle was in the early 80's. She was the mother of my dearest friend Patricia. I had heard so much about her that I was not quite sure what to expect. What I saw was an incredibly vivacious and outgoing person who welcomed all to her house. She was also exceptionally kind and welcomed all and sundry into her house and her family. I did not know her well but the one thing I did know about her was that her family was the rhyme and reason she got up in the morning. Over the years one other thing I got to know about her was that she was a survivor and surrounded by a loving and caring family. I think that you can tell a person's life by their end story. Mrs. Doyle's was difficult and tragic but all the love and pride she lavished on her three beautiful daughters returned to her twenty fold in the final years. The world is a poorer place with the passing of Lillian but much better for her time spent here. My heart goes out to Patricia, Maura and Shannon on their grievous loss but can only say, what a life lived to the max! She will be always in my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Tina Rasmussen (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2020

  • Patricia I did not know your Mother, but I send you and your family my deepest condolences. If she was anything like you then she had boundless energy and intelligence. All the best. - Posted by: Kym Rafuse (Friend of Patricia ) on: Jan 30, 2020

  • Although I don’t think that I ever met “ the Chief “ my partner Julianna and I have had many happy hours interfacing with her daughters and extended family on a regular basis. If she had the education, the humour, the Irishness and the concern for friends that THEY all demonstrate then surely she was a fine person before illness took her. May she Rest In Peace. Suaimhneas siorai tabhair di, a Thiarna, agus go lonrai solas suthain uirthi. - Posted by: James Brennan (Family Friend) on: Jan 29, 2020
