GORDON PAUL JURKOW

After a prolonged respiratory ailment our brother Gordon Jurkow, uncle to Michael and Gillian and great-uncle to Gabriel and Nina, passed away at the Grace Hospital Emergency Unit Wednesdy, January 22, 2020.
Born on December 7, 1937, growing up on Grove Street in the lower Point Douglas area, Gordon attended Norquay Elementary until the summer of 1949.
The Anna and Paul Jurkow family moved to the high ground of central Winnipeg in time to avoid the damaging waters of the great Red River Flood of 1950. Gordon and his younger siblings, Norman (Joyce) and Sylvia (Norman), attended Victoria Albert and Hugh John MacDonald schools until the summer of 1955. The family then moved to Elmwood in the Glen Elm area, where they attended, Glen Elm, Lord Selkirk and Elmwood high schools.
As the older brother, Gordon led the way getting involved with a lot of work activities including Winnipeg Free Press paper routes, which were always passed down to Norm; delivering 200 papers daily in the downtown core. At that time a customer paid the paper boy 60 cents bi-weekly so Gord always had money in his pocket; earning him about $600.00 year. Not bad for a kid going to elementary and junior high schools.
Gord then went into setting pins in a bowling alley for a while and, with a few buddies, joined Air Cadets, the Red River 220 Group; he got to go to Abbotsford, BC, where he flew in an aircraft in his early teens in the 1950's.
After high school he began working in a paint lab with Phillips Paints but realized he did not like this line of work. He then began driving cab with Moores for 25 to 30 years which he enjoyed, especially driving his regular lady customers.
We are very grateful to the health care Gord received in his later years. The doctors at St. Boniface Hospital were very instrumental in his well being and for this the family is extremely grateful. The caring staff at Charleswood Care Centre ensured he was well cared for, living to the ripe old age of 82, and, in his final moments, he was fortunate to be in the care of the supportive and understanding staff of Grace Hospital.
A graveside service will be held in the summer.
