Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Mike was my younger brother by 21 months. Our mum says he was a beautiful, happy baby, but he was in constant motion and he didn’t sleep much! He liked to stand in his crib, jostle it around the room and pull down the curtains. When I was about 4 years old we were jumping on the couch (mum warned us not to) and I fell, cutting my chin on the coffee table. While we waited for dad to drive home from work to take me to the clinic for stitches, Mike comforted me by bringing me a book. He knew me well even at age 2! He was a very patient and loving older brother to John, including him in all his activities with his friends. We loved growing up in Flin Flon. Summers at our cottage at Beaver Lake were filled with swimming, fishing, water skiing and boating. There was an outdoor rink in the playground at the end of our block where they played hockey, and we went snowmobiling with our dad. There is an adorable photo online of Mike and John in a Flin Flon Figure Skating Club event. When I finished university and moved to Victoria, we didn’t see each other as often, but there were memorable holidays with our mum. We spent one Christmas in Whistler skiing and another in Maui scuba diving. Ask John about his drive back from Whistler to Manitoba with Mike! Mike was a devoted and loving father to Riley and Connor. He was my children Hannah and Adrian’s most colourful uncle by far! My admiration for Mike during his final illness is profound. He was very brave, and I never heard him express bitterness, anger or ask, “why me?” Every time I spoke to him he said he was doing ok. He focused on spending time with Riley and Connor. I was honoured to be present during Mike’s final days. He left us peacefully, having been surrounded by loving family and friends. Mike, I was proud to be your sister, and will love you and miss you always. Allie - Posted by: Allison Ferg (Sister) on: Feb 15, 2020
