GERALD PHILLIP WILFRED SCHMALL

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Gerald Phillip Wilfred Schmall, 68, early Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Niverville Personal Care Home in Niverville, MB.
He is survived by his sons, Brett (Simmy), and Chad; grandchildren, Lance and Aasha; his mother Margery (née Malmquist); brother Jim (Jo-Anne) and his children Katrina and Jarett, along with many cousins, aunts, an uncle, nieces and nephews, and in-laws.
He was predeceased by his wife Cora (née Courchaine), his father William Edward Sr., and his brother William Edward Jr.
Dad was born April 16, 1951 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. His growing up years were spent between Brunkild, Pinawa, Kenora, Selkirk and Winnipeg. Characterized by his love for family and a solid work ethic, his 'million dollar smile' and outgoing demeanour were surely what wooed Mom his way. They were married October 28, 1972, and began their family in Winnipeg. They moved to Calgary for a duration, then returned to Manitoba, spending the next 30 plus years in Ile Des Chênes. Dad's passion was his family and there was little that he wouldn't do for them. He volunteered much time with minor sports as his boys grew up; hockey in the winter and fastball in the summer. A builder with an entrepreneurial flair, he spent the brunt of his working years in construction, before starting his own welding company that he later retired from. A mentor, with a truly diverse skill set, he was as gifted a polka dancer as he was a heavy machine operator. The world is left a little bit better because of his time spent here.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the TC Energy Centre in Ile Des Chênes, MB.
The family expresses their thanks to the staff and general community at the Niverville Personal Care Home.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dad's name can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba:

  • We have a hard time accepting the fact that Cora is no longer with us, but when we heard about Gerry it came as a big shock. We were friends for a long time and miss them dearly. Our condolences to the family and our prayers are with you. Remember the good times, the laughter, the funny stories. I know it hurts, but only time will heal the pain. Chad and Brett you have each other, your children and your Grandma, bless her - such a wonderful person. I wish there was something I could say to make things better - but there isn't. - Be strong - Posted by: Ray and Pauline Bodnarchuk (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2020

  • Auntie Marge, Jim,Brett, Chad and families. Gerald sure was a special man, who along with your Mom, welcomed everyone into their home. There are so many memories over the years at family gatherings, especially the Reunion at their homestead back in 2004, which brought many of us together. I will miss his blue eyes and smile that could light up a room. Rest in peace Uncle Jerry, until we meet again. Hugs! - Posted by: Tammy Born (Niece) on: Feb 15, 2020

  • We came home from Phoenix and there was Gerry clearing our driveway of snow. We met up for dinner with Gerry and Cora in Phoenix on another occasion. He was a good friend and so was Cora. We feel just a bit cheated of their friendship by their early passing. - Posted by: Lorne and Ingrid (Neighbor and friend) on: Feb 15, 2020
