SUSAN GOYER
(née PRATT)

On Monday, February 10, 2020, after living with Alzheimer's for 10 years, Susan Ruth Marie Goyer (née Pratt) passed away at the age of 70.
Susan will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Matt (Chelsea), Aimee (Ian) and Dani (Jason), and her five grandchildren, who knew her as 'Suni', Isaac, Ellice, Ani, Knox and Zoe. Also mourning Susan's passing are her sister Gail Mills, her close lifelong friends, Ginny Lees, Pat Turenne and Joan Cormie, and several nieces and nephews.
Susan was born on June 2, 1949, to Jack and Kathleen Pratt, and was the youngest of three children. She was predeceased by her older brother Ted Pratt, her sister-in-law Marie Pratt, her brother-in-law Michael Mills; and it would be a mistake not to mention her two loyal canine companions, Pintail and Echo.
The Pratt family lived in St. James and spent their summers at the family cottage, 'Snug Harbour', at West Hawk Lake. In 1986, Susan and David purchased their own family cottage at Echo Bay on Lake of the Woods, which became, and continues to be, an important family gathering spot.
Susan loved nature, wildlife and living by the water. The family home, on Marchand Road on the banks of the Red River, was a favourite place of hers for almost 20 years. Fighting the 1997 'Flood of the Century', as a resident and a passionate advocate for area residents, became a defining moment of her life.
Over the years Susan worked as a physiotherapist, publisher's rep and clinical researcher. However, her most important role was raising her three children. Living outside the city limits meant she spent hours and hours driving her kids to all manner of activities. Whether it was ringette, hockey, figure skating, music lessons, baseball, volleyball, wood carving or sailing, Susan devoted her time to supporting her kids in all their endeavours. The calendars she kept through the years paint a picture of how busy she was and leave her kids wondering how she possibly managed it all.
The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their excellent care and support over the last four years.
A drop-in gathering in Susan's honour will take place on Friday, March 6, 2020, at the Pavilion in Assiniboine Park from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The family looks forward to connecting with family and friends to celebrate her memory.
Donations can be made in Susan's name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • Our condolences to Aimee, Matt and Dani and their families. So very sad to hear about Susan's struggle with Alzheimer and to lose her this way. Over the years Summer at the lake always included walks with Susan, the dogs and many stories and good conversations. Jim and Heather - Posted by: The Wheelers (cottage neighbours) on: Mar 07, 2020

  • Susan was a great person to work with during the flood of 1997. She had compassion and knew what her community was going thru. She fought hard and long for compensation. Susan could relate and put her heart out to others while trying to keep her own home in focus. The last number of months, I have gone to visit Susan and would recite Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer. I would sing Amazing Grace. I cherish the times Susan would slightly move her lips to exactly the words I recited. This happened almost every time. My sympathy to Aimee, Matthew and Dani - Posted by: Lorraine Bergmann (Friend and work colleague ) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • We are very saddened to hear of Susan’s passing. Our families have had very many enjoyable experiences together. We first met Susan when our young children were in the same class at Friends Together Preschool. As the children connected, so did the adults. Our friendship continued to the lake, where a short boat ride connected our cottages. Susan was an enthusiastic organizer and participant of our many child-oriented lake activities! We have many happy memories of summer days spent together, exploring the lake, blueberry picking, swimming and a multi-day sailing trip with one boat, two mums, three young children and a dog . from the Kuiper/Barker family: Amy, Ted, Ed & Lidi - Posted by: Lidi Kuiper (friend) on: Feb 27, 2020

  • We have many happy memories of Susan, Matt, Aimee and Dani at Echo Bay! From Matt teaching Laura and Paul the Boating course to Dani playing on the dock with them, they were happy years! Susan's love of nature will always be remembered, especially the bird specimens she lovingly saved in plastic baggies in the freezer! She was a unique, vibrant, fun loving person! • Susan Pratt was a good and very helpful friend back during our school days in St James. It was wonderful to see her again after several decades when the “Birchwood girls” started to meet at Assiniboine Park. • Susan was an amazing neighbour. We walked miles and miles together with our dogs. Matthew, Aimee and Dani were her centre; her focus on creating joyful, smart and engaged children. She liked integrity, humour and compassion in a person, perhaps as she was a mix of all three. Her laugh, her smile and her genuine love of life and people remain a sweet memory. • Saddened to hear about Susan's struggle with Alzheimer and to lose her this way. She helped us so much over the years as her neighbour: she was a superstar advocate, a source of strength -- and information.
