GORDON (GORDY) CARPENTER
Gordy was born in Piney, MB on March 21, 1938 to William and Josephine (Gokiert) Carpenter. Moved to Toronto, ON at age three with his family; finally settling in Winnipeg, MB for junior high and high school. Gordy excelled at sports and quickly was noticed as a top athlete. He was a track star at St. James Collegiate and recognized as a budding baseball star. He was asked to play on the city men's team at only 16 years of age. Here is where he met his lifelong friend, John Hewitt. Gordy's strong legs came from all the jobs he had as a boy (delivering groceries, setting pins at the bowling alley and being a switchman for the railway).
While working at a private golf course he became friends with George Knutson and caddied for him for one summer in 1959 on the PGA tour. Dad later graduated from college and moved to Rochester, MN, USA where he married his ex-wife, Dorothy, and raised three children. He came back to Canada when he could, visiting with family and friends; enjoying Folklorama in the summer several times. Gordy loved being outside in nature, playing softball and the guitar.
We love and miss you dearly
Survived by his children, Michael Carpenter (Linda), Laura Sufka (Eric) and Jennifer Carpenter (Steve); grandchildren, Grace, Isabelle, Ayla, Hudson, William and Lincoln; brother Richard Carpenter, and sister Bonnie Okopski.
A celebration of Gordy's life will be held in Rochester, MN, USA on March 7.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send memorials to Our Lady of Peace Hospice, 2076 St. Anthony, St. Paul, MN, USA 55104.
