EDWARD CLARK (CHAMP) RUSSENHOLT

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Edward Clark "Champ" Russenholt, at the age of 86, on February 29, 2020.
Champ was predeceased by his mother Kay; father Ed; aunt Mary; sister Lynne; brothers-in-law, Bob and Don, and sister-in-law Shirley.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Fayre; brother Ben; sons, Jeff (Vicki), Ben (Jackie) and Drew (Angela); grand-children, Elliott, Jaxon, Annie, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Growing up on Rupertsland Street and Wolseley Avenue, Champ attended Luxton, Wolseley, Isaac Brock, and Gordon Bell schools. He graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba in 1956 and was member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. On July 9, 1960 Champ and Fayre were married at Norwood United Church.
Starting in 1950, Champ farmed along the Assiniboine River. In 1963 he began a career at Manitoba Pool Elevators, working first in the Farm Supply Department, then as a Field Supervisor in Southern Manitoba, and finally as an Assistant Information Director in Winnipeg. When Champ left MPE, he worked for a time at Seedex Canada in Carman. The last 10 years of his working life saw Champ employed as Assistant Classified Advertising Manager for the Manitoba Co-operator.
While playing for the Winnipeg Warriors at the age of 24, Champ worked as a practice goalie for both the Jets and visiting teams. He later shared his expertise at goaltending clinics, as a coach at the Silver Heights Community Club, and with the St. James Canadians.
Champ instilled a love of nature in his three boys while spending time fishing, sailing, and playing in the water at Victoria Beach every summer. In the 1990s, they adventured in a 26-foot sloop called TT&A (for "Today, Tomorrow, and Always") that sailed out of Gimli Yacht Club.
After taking an early retirement package in 1996, Champ and Fayre moved to their cottage at Lochwoods Estates on Lake Winnipeg. While living there, Champ enjoyed golfing at Northernaire, swimming at Camp Morton, communicating with others via Ham radio, watching Jack Nicklaus play in the Senior PGA, and creating wood projects using his scroll saw. Following the sale of the cottage in 2011, Champ and Fayre spent time living at Agape Villa and then Dakota House in Winnipeg. In June of 2018, Champ moved to Charleswood Care Centre and then to Golden Links Lodge, where he spent the last months of his life.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff from Friendly Care Giver Services, Home Care, Charleswood Care Centre, and Golden Links Lodge for taking such good care of Champ over the last year and a half. Thank you especially to Noreen and Maureen for your kindness and special care in his final hours.
A celebration of Champ's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020, at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I met Champ in Winnipeg as I worked with his wife at 2PPCLI. We enjoyed our visits with Fayre and Champ and met them up in Edmonton a couple of times when they visited family there. My husband and I always get a chuckle when we remember Champ bidding us farewell from the Olive Garden. He said 'Kiss Kiss'. It was just so funny. Sad to see him gone. He lived a good life. Sorry for your loss Fayre. - Posted by: Joan Peterson (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2021

  • Champ was always fun, smiling, laughing and with that mischievous glint in his eye. Lynne was a few years older and Ben several years younger so my two sisters and I always wanted to play with Champ. Excitement ran high when we visited our grandparents in Wawanesa. One afternoon, Champ disappeared for a few hours and was later found asleep under a giant rhubarb leaf. It must have been his only sanctuary. When Champ retired, he and Fayre spent one winter in Tampa where my late sister Ruth and I had a units in a retirement park. I remember Champ's unfailing kindness and generosity to my late husband who was losing his sight but still enjoyed a game of golf. The world is a sadder place without Champ. My deepest sympathy to Fayre, his boys and his extended family. - Posted by: kay vanstone marshall (cousin) on: Mar 15, 2020

  • My father, Frank McBurney, who passed away in 1986, was a grain buyer for Manitoba Pool Elevators for 47 years. I still remember how he spoke with admiration of and respect for Champ. God bless. - Posted by: Phil McBurney (Son of friend) on: Mar 08, 2020

  • I have known Champ my whole life, how blessed I was to call him uncle. He gave the best hugs and had a laugh as big as all outdoors. When I was young, I used to love hearing stories Mom or Gramma told about Champ as a kid and all his crazy adventures - like Gramma attaching an alarm clock to his bike so he'd be home in time for dinner! My deepest condolences to Auntie Fayre, Jeff, Ben and Drew - he was one of a kind. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered. - Posted by: Tara (Niece) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • Fayre, so sorry to learn of Champ's passing. Lee and I are in Mexico and so cannot attend the celebration of Champ's life. A life well lived , indeed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Wayne and Lee - Posted by: Wayne Anderson (Cousin) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • I worked with Champ at MB Pool. He always made me laugh. We used to walk together at lunch break and share stories. I had his retirement party at my home, I was so sorry to see him go, the office was never the same. Even though we did not work together for long you made a lasting impression on my life. May you Rest In Peace my dear friend. Shirley - Posted by: Shirley (Pritchard) Eckert (Working colleague MB Pool) on: Mar 04, 2020

  • I was very troubled to hear of Champ's passing. He was one of a kind and touched the hearts of all folks who had the pleasure to have known him. Champ always met you with a broad smile and a big," Hi There". Laura, now also passed and I were fortunate enough to have been hosted several times by Champ and Fayre in there lovely cottage at the lake. We were neighbours of theirs at our beloved Lochwood's Estates on the lake, north of Gimli. Golf, cards, beach outings and many other fun events were always front and center when the Russenholt's were involved. Champ will be missed, "Big Time" and we extend our sincere sympathy to Fayre and their family. Rest well my friend. Jack and Elaine now in Kelowna. - Posted by: Jack Reay (Friend and past neighbour) on: Mar 04, 2020

  • My condolences to the Russenholt family. Ed was an amateur radio operator. Ed's Call sign was "VE4RL." Ed's father was a Short Wave Listener and they both were members of MARM (Manitoba Amateur Radio Museum) located on the grounds of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum, south of Austin, Manitoba. In Amateur Radio Ed is now a SK (Silent Key) a term of respect for a deceased Amateur Radio Operator. The term originated with early telegraph and wireless operators. "Rest in Peace." - Posted by: Bruce Johnson (fellow Amateur Radio Operator "VE4KQ") on: Mar 04, 2020
