WILLIAM GARY BENNETT

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Bennett on Sunday morning, March 1, 2020. Gary passed away suddenly after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis at the age of 82.
Gary is survived by Doris, his loving wife of 56 years, son Neil (Corinne), daughter Laura, his grandchildren, Natalie, Paige and Jude, who were the light of his life, four brothers, two sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, and his dearest lifelong friend Bob Thomas. He was predeceased by his parents and one sister.
Gary spent his early years in Altamont, and Carmen, Manitoba. He graduated from Tech Voc high school and became an electrician. Gary worked as an apprentice and journeyman in places such as the construction of the old Winnipeg Airport Terminal, and the rocket site in Churchill, Manitoba in the early 1960s. In 1976 he started his own company which he ran until his retirement, when he went to work for a mining company in Pickle Lake, Ontario where he retired a second and third time. Over the years, Gary spent much of his time volunteering in the community, as he was very talented in the arts, enjoyed many hobbies such as music, woodworking and painting.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Selkirk and Gimli hospitals and the EMT's for their care and compassion.
Private service for family and friends will be held at St. Clements Anglican Church in St. Andrews.
In lieu of flowers, donation to the Manitoba Lung Association or the St. Clements Church would be greatly appreciated.

  • I remember Gary Bennett from my teenage years living in St. Andrews. Many evenings Gary would be out in his garage working on some project or another, and I'd wander over to say hi. He was always good natured and interesting. He knew a lot. Once, he took me along with him to see a friend who had an apiary down the road. I remember feeling quite honoured. He may not have known it, but when I saw his red pickup truck come home, I always felt that everything was okay. Gary was a nice man, a good man and a very cool guy. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Bennett, Neil, and Laura. - Posted by: Myron Kosky (neighbor) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • Gary helped me buy my first car in 1965. He was always a kind caring person. May past happy memories of fun times spent with Gary bring comfort and strength to family now and in the future. Love Elaine - Posted by: Elaine Bennett (Sister in law) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of Gary. Although we seldom saw each other over the years, I always wished that it could be different. It seems we always wait too long to do the things we should. Love to all of you in this time of sorrow. Cousin Marilyn - Posted by: Marilyn Hebert (cousin) on: Mar 05, 2020

  • Sorry for your loss. Gary grew up next door to my Grandparents, and if they ever needed anything Gary was there to help them. My Grandmother enjoyed your visits thru the years and appreciated your kindness. - Posted by: Sharon Meads (Former neighbour ) on: Mar 05, 2020
