PHILIPPE HAROLD JOSEPH FILLION
November 11, 1951 - March 1, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce that Phil passed peacefully at the age of 68 years. He was a great father, husband, and pepere.
Phil is survived by his loving wife Shirley, of 45 years; his three children, Kris (Kelly), Dustin (Bethani), Dawn (Ryan), and his grandchildren, Emily, Sydney, Bailey and Tyler-Rae. He is also survived by his younger brother Bernie. Phil was predeceased by his brother Denis, and mother Maddie (memere).
Phil had a real love for life and a passion for sports. He spent many years travelling with his wife Shirley to Guayabitos, Mexico and spending many summers out at Miami Beach, Manitoba, with many family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at ANAVETS Assiniboia (Army Navy Air Force Building), 3584 Portage Avenue Unit 283 on Thursday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m.

  • Phil was a good friend who we met in Mexico about 5 years ago. He welcomed us into the hotel and showed us the ropes, shared his apartment one year when he wasn’t able to make it to Mexico, his chicken noodle soup as well as many other gestures of friendship. Shirley was a fun person and they made a great couple. We were so fortunate to be able to spend some time with Phil. He will be missed. - Posted by: Fritz (Alfredo) & Anne Phaneuf (Friends ) on: Mar 11, 2020

  • Shirley: when my Saskatchewan friends left earlier than usual from Quayabitos, I was left on my own and a bit unsure of what it would be like. But luckily for me, because of that I got to know all you Winnipegers. And what a bunch. So much fun and laughter. It didn’t take long to see what a character Phil was and feel welcomed by you all. I will always treasure my time with you all and hope to see you next year. Take care my friends and remember his laughter and that smile. Thank you for being there for me. - Posted by: Bev Anderson (Quayabitos friend) on: Mar 11, 2020

  • I am so sorry to hear about Phil. If it was not for Him and Shirley we would never of had our place at Miami. They invited my parents out for a weekend and not long after my parents were camping there followed by my uncle and myself and Collin. We had great times with the Fillion’s. Best damn Corn roast and crib player I know. May you find the peace and strength to get through this difficult time. Love you guys. Lisa & Collin - Posted by: Lisa Wattier (Friend ) on: Mar 10, 2020

  • Dear Shirley and family, Phil will always be remembered by his family and friends. What I remember most was when we shared a small one bedroom apartment on River Avenue where the old Victoria Hospital was converted to apartments. This was in 1971/1972. Financially, it was very tough times for both of us striving just to meet our daily living expenses. He was sleeping on an old mattress in the only bedroom. I was in the living room/kitchen sleeping on the floor on top of three old sofa cushions. Every morning Phil would get up and go to work, not knowing if he had work to go to, while I would take the bus to university. Despite this he always had a positive outlook and a strong determination to keep going forward. You see Phil was deeply in love with this young lady from Gilbert Plains. Even though I had not met you, I knew all about you, and more importantly I knew that Phil’s life was about to change and did it ever! Thank-you for always being there for Phil, as he was for the rest of us. Even though later we lived far away from each other we always tried to keep in touch until he couldn’t. To the very end I could always count on Phil to send me uplifting and humorous stories. Phil inspired all of us and I know he will continue to do that in our memories and in our prayers. Thank-you Phil! - Posted by: Luc Girard (Friend) on: Mar 10, 2020

  • I’m so sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. I worked with him many years ago at BDL. He sure brought a lot of joy and laughter to our days-never a dull moment or conversation when he was around!! May those precious memories you each carry keep him alive in your hearts. - Posted by: Jennifer (Friend/coworker) on: Mar 09, 2020

  • Shirley, please accept our deepest condolences during this difficult time for you and your family. Although we did not see you very often in recent years, you guys were always very close friends, and we thought of you often. I have fond memories of our early football team(s), first in Elie with pickup games organized usually by Denis, and then our touch football team in the early years of our marriages. These were good times and good memories. I suspect that Denis is organizing football teams in a better place and has just has been rejoined with his favourite receiver. - Posted by: Roger and Yvonne Girard (Friends) on: Mar 09, 2020

  • My sincerest condolences to you Shirley, Bernie and all the family. Phil was very special as was his Mom "Auntie Madeleine", my godmother. I will be eternally grateful for their support of my father, Maddie's brother, and Phil's godfather - Lionel Bouchard of Elie. Phil in his teens enjoyed coming out to the farm to play and tease his nine (mostly female) cousins! He was like a brother to me. Despite the distance we kept in touch as we shared a special bond. No doubt Phil and "Maddie" are already trading jokes befitting their heavenly home. We'll miss you Phil, Cousin Marlene Légaré, Vancouver, B.C. - Posted by: Marlene Légaré (First Cousin) on: Mar 09, 2020
