(nee LEYS)
February 24, 1934 - March 10, 2020

With her family by her side, Jean passed away peacefully on March 10, 2020, at a youthful age of 86.
She leaves to mourn Caesar, her devoted husband of 64 years, her children, Judy Roeland (Donny), Robert (Leslee), Debbie Sellen (Linton), Darlene Girard (Mario), Daniel (Dianne) and Cheryl (Perry). Grandma was fiercely protective and proud of her 14 grandchildren, Erin (Ian), Megan (Scott), Kristen (Drew), David (Noushin), Jennifer (Michael), Catherine (Jordan), Brett, Dayna, Lauren (Colin), Carmen (Douglas), Tyson, Reece, Paden and Avery. She also took great joy in her two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Remington. Mom was predeceased by her siblings, Albert (Mariette), Robert (Denise) and Yvette (George), as well as Caesar's siblings, Frank, Rene and Rachel. She is survived by her dear sisters, Laurette (Roger) and Jeannette (Denis), Caesar's siblings, Angèle, Regina and Laurence, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mom was born in Tielt, Belgium to Kleber Leys and Angèle Van Hecke. She immigrated to Canada in 1952, where she met Dad, the love of her life, and together they raised their family on a dairy/grain farm in Springfield. Mom and Dad enjoyed dancing, travelling and spending winters in Arizona. Mom was an astute business woman and farmer, an avid curler and card player, and a champion lawn-bowler representing Manitoba in many national competitions. Jean received lots of strength and encouragement from the friendships she developed through her many social endeavours. She honourably cared for her parents and husband putting their needs above her own. As the matriarch of our family, Mom was in charge until the very end. She was strong, generous, kind and always made time for her family.
We would like to thank all of the caregivers involved with Mom and Dad, in particular long-time caregivers, Laura, Vernie and Carol. As well, thank you to Dr. Paul Daeninck and Shawna from CancerCare and Christine, Llora, Norma, Vicki, Kelly and Doris who helped to care for Mom and our family during her final days.
Mom will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts.

  • What a beautiful tribute to a very wonderful lady. My heartfelt sympathy to the entire Roeland family. Auntie Jean always had a big smile for everyone and was welcoming every time we visited as kids. She made sure there was "real milk from the store" for us city kids that wouldn't drink that farm stuff LOL. What a wonderful life well lived full of adventure she had.
