DON CURRIE

It is with profound sadness that the family of Don Currie announces his passing on March 18, 2020, at Health Sciences Centre after complications from surgery. Family was by his side.
Dad is survived by his daughters, Lori (Greg), Sheri (Chris) and grandchildren, Avery, Blake, Janelle, and Kellen.
Dad was born on November 24, 1934, in Fort William, Ontario, to Hector and Mary Currie. From an early age, Catholic faith and sports played an important part of Dad's life.
Dad briefly worked in Ft. Francis, Ontario with T.D. Bank. He transferred to a branch in Winnipeg but left the bank in 1962 after accepting a position with Air Canada as a passenger agent at the Winnipeg Airport. Dad would remain with Air Canada for 36 years, eventually retiring in 1998. The final 10 years of Dad's career were spent in the Maple Leaf Lounge.
It was at the airport that Dad met his wife, Jeanne. They were married in 1968. Two daughters completed the family: Lori in 1970, and Sheri in 1971. Mom and Dad's Air Canada family was the hub of social activities and parties for many years. From baby showers, bridal showers, Christmas parties, New Year's parties and anniversaries; there were many fun times and such happy memories.
Dad loved sports, especially the Calgary Stampeders. Many wagers and arguments with Bomber fans went on throughout football season. In addition to football, there was baseball, hockey, curling and golf always on TV in our house, or being recorded. Dad spent many happy summers as a pitcher for the Air Canada slow-pitch league. He eventually graduated to a senior's slow-pitch league in Charleswood, where he enjoyed the outdoors (the bruises) and the companionship of his teammates.
Dad was fiercely dedicated to his family. Family dinners were always important and turkey with all the fixin's had to be on the menu. His greatest joy was seeing his grandchildren, cribbage games with Greg and playing Rummy with Jeanne. Sadly, Mom passed away in 2004. Dad was able to remain in his home for 10 years until his dementia made life at home unsafe and he moved to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence in 2015. The family is grateful for the support provided by the SCRR 1. You are all like family to us.
As Dad's dementia progressed, we made the difficult decision to move him to Brightwater Senior Living of Tuxedo in February 2020. We were unaware of an underlying illness that forced the recent surgery from which he would unfortunately not recover. We are very grateful for the considerate care provided by the Brightwater staff for the short time Dad was there. We would also like to thank the staff on ward 5GH at the Health Sciences Centre for their exemplary care and support.
Many thanks to Dad's Air Canada friends, especially Garth Teel for his continued companionship, lunches at Nick's Inn, burgers and fries delivered to Dad's suite and friendly visits.
Due to recent global events, a private family service will be held. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

  • Lori and Sheri, I am so sorry for your loss. Let the good memories fill your mind and heart. There are lots of memories. He was so proud of his girls. My memory of Don is how hard he made me laugh at his pranks. He was also very caring of fellow workers, making sure you had a ride home if your car broke down, etc, the first to offer help. My sincere sympathy, Diane - Posted by: Diane Dixon (CoWorker and friend) on: Mar 23, 2020

  • Don was a friendly, helpful and all-around great person to work with. He was a hard-core fan of the Calgary Stampeders and I fondly recall an annual bet he had during football season with another colleague (and Bomber fan) that displayed the results of every game and thus became a fun event for us all. He truly was one of the good guys! Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Wally Cawson (Colleague) on: Mar 22, 2020

He was lucky to have you and your families make sure he was happy and comfortable these last several years. Twyla & Andre - Posted by: Twyla Jaworski (Friend) on: Mar 21, 2020

  • I have so many fond memories of the whole Currie family. As one of the Air Canada kids, we spent many happy times together at Christmas parties and other celebrations. Mr. Currie and my dad, Garth Teel, were particularly fond of dressing up in very questionable outfits to crash wedding or baby showers for the Air Canada gals. Mr. Currie always had a smile on his face and he had the best laugh! I will remember him fondly and am sending love to the entire Currie clan. - Posted by: Laura (Teel) Allardice (Family Friend) on: Mar 21, 2020

  • At this sad time, we remember that death ends a life and not a relationship, and memories are how we keep our departed alive. Mine: memories of our meeting at a wedding in Manitoba, bubbles in the air and family laughter everywhere. Sincerest sympathy to you whom he held closest to his heart. - Posted by: Annie Kaps (Aunt of Greg's) on: Mar 21, 2020

  • I had the pleasure of working with Don at YWG. He was always a gentleman; positive, kind, uplifting and a lot of fun to be around. He will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Ken Dzogan (Former Colleague) on: Mar 21, 2020
