JOHN ARTHUR ZDAN
1924 -2020

Dad passed peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Granville Hospice in Vancouver, BC.
He is lovingly and proudly remembered by his five children and their families, including six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He joined his beloved wife, Natalie (deceased 1996) on what would have been their 71st wedding anniversary.
Born in Glenella, Manitoba, John had an interesting career as an entrepreneur in the hotel business with his dad, in the grocery business as Johnny's Solo Store in Transcona, and as a civil servant with Communities Economic Development Fund (CEDF). He and Natalie retired to the west coast in 1992.
Dad lived independently until this past February. He relished playing cards, watching sports, and staying in touch with his vast network of family and friends. As the last of his generation in the Zdan family, his connection to younger generations was admirable.
We will miss him dearly but are thankful for his long and honourable life.
Memorial plans are pending.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Centre for Ability or the Vancouver Hospice Society are gratefully appreciated.
First Memorial Funeral Services - Boal Chapel and Memorial Gardens, North Vancouver, in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Dear Val and family. My condolonces to you all. I was John's minister, and he was like a father to me. Life in this world is not the same without him. It was his personality, how he looked at life has been a lesson to me. A man of grace and kindness and full of wisdom. He knew the quality and was attracted to it in all aspects, and yet he did not demand but utilized the best of what he had in his hands. I will never forget to appreciate his tears in my last day at our church. When I saw him the last time I was in Vancouver in January 2020 I was praying in tears, kneeling at his bedside. John said, "Please do not cry for me Murat." I replied, "I am not crying for you John, I am crying for myself! You are getting closer to heaven and life is not the same on earth without you." And those tears will remain in my heart always wet until I see him again in heaven. - Posted by: Murat Kuntel (John's minister) on: Apr 22, 2020

  • Made many trips to your parents store in Transcona. I am looking on a picture with your parents standing in the store. This was for Transcona's 50th. Great to shop there. Both the store and the old store/family home are still standing, but have been sold. Nothing new up yet. In our thoughts and prayers.....God Bless.......... - Posted by: Y.
