AVIS BRISCOE
(GRIERSON)
December 27, 1929 - March 28, 2020
Left to cherish her memory are her family: sons, Guy (Linda) and Barry (Sandy); grandchildren, James, Ian (Melanie), Erin, Jill (Mike), Amy (Justin) and (Mimi), great- grandchildren, Kyle, Hanna, Zach, Nate, Lucas and Neve, and many dear nieces and nephews, all whom she dearly loved. She will be missed by many wonderful friends and relatives, especially her younger brother Merv in British Columbia.
Mom spent many years working at Safeway and then at CIBC. In her retirement, she volunteered at Fort Whyte Alive, kept a beautiful yard and flower gardens and hosted family dinners and barbeques. Wherever she went, whomever she encountered, she always thought the best of everyone. She made you feel special. What she loved most of all was her family. She cherished all the times she spent with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. This included babysitting, driving kids in carpools, ferrying kids to activities and attending soccer, ringette and softball games and dance recitals. She was also the trusty family pet sitter during vacation times.
At 57 years of age, she wasn't sure she was qualified to volunteer at Fort Whyte Alive. She was told the only qualification she needed was a love of children and they would teach her the rest. She loved giving tours to school groups several times a week, as well as volunteering for any special event and any inside assistance that was needed. This continued for 21 years.
She spent her last two and a half years at St. Norbert Personal Care Home. The family is so appreciative of the wonderful, patient, compassionate care she received throughout that time, from all the staff.
Over the years Mom donated to a vast array of charities, including being a foster parent to a little boy in Africa. She enjoyed teaching him through her letters about life in Canada. She was a fiercely proud Canadian. If friends so desire, donations in Avis's memory can be made to a charity of your choice.
Due to COVID-19, a celebration of Mom's life will be postponed until it is safe to gather.

I’m sorry to hear about the passing of Avis. I got to know Avis at the St. Norbert Personal scare Home where I would do her hair every week. We had so many great conversations about her family and her life. She was a fascinating woman and was always smiling. I enjoyed coming into work every week to tend to her hair needs. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see her near the end because of the COVID pandemic. I will miss her greatly!!! - Posted by: Jaime (Hairstylist) on: Apr 05, 2020

Sympathy to Avis's family on the loss of a dear friend of mind. We worked together at Fort Whyte Alive for 18 yrs. I would visit her once a year at the different places she resided including the latest one. We were just talking about her the other day and to my surprise, I saw her name in the obits. I was shock. RIP my friend....Jeannette Hardy - Posted by: Jeannette Hardy (friend) on: Apr 04, 2020

What a lady! Avis stood tall, yet diminutive in stature. Never ever was there a negative word or even tone, from such a positive and loving woman from her roles as sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend - so many roles she played in her long and well lived life. Years ago I gifted Avis with a few hand crafted Xmas ornaments and for years, at every opportunity, she would mention how she loved and appreciated them. A small gesture to me so obviously pleased her immensely and she took every opportunity to say so! And her love shone through to everyone! Avis will be missed dearly by everyone she touched over the years. It's been a pleasure being counted as one of her friends. Love to the Briscoe family. Yes, I remember Avis very well as she made quite an impression on a newly hired, young, part-time worker at Safeway in February 1962. When I went into the store, I asked one of the cashiers that I would be starting and she directed to another person. This was Avis. I noticed that she had this bubbly personality and she informed me that she was the head cashier. She took me to the store manager. After that she told me how to fill out the payroll time sheets and the coffee break on my shift. She was very friendly and put a very nervous person at ease. I really enjoyed going in to work and working with Avis. As I was a new bagger, I worked with her whenever it got busy and she was in the check stand. I think it was because of Avis's personality, that all of the cashiers at our store were so friendly and cheerful. It was fun to work all of them up front. Avis hosted a staff party at her house in the newly developed Windsor Park. I met her husband Jim there. Over the years, we had several parties at her house. She was a super host. I have a lot of fond memories of Avis from the times we worked together at the Main & Luxton store. She made an impression on me that I would not forget. Thank you and Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Colin Dederick (friend from Safeway) on: Apr 04, 2020
