MARIANNE CHORNEY
1939 - 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Marianne Chorney (nee Awissus), at 80 years old. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her husband Edward (Eddie) Chorney, and her parents, Elise and Fritz Awissus.
Marianne is survived by her sons: Glenn (Pat), their children, Kristin (Rob) and Meagen; Lee (Angelica), their children, Fernando (Sarah) and Christopher, as well as great-grandson Madison; and Darrell (Lori), their children, Dean and Katie, along with numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and many great friends.
Mom was born in Tilsit, Germany. She moved to Edmonton with her parents in 1950. In Edmonton she met the love of her life, Eddie Chorney, who was originally from Fraserwood but was working in Edmonton at the time. They were married in July 1957 where Glenn and Lee were both born before moving to Winnipeg, where they had Darrell (Charlie). During those years, she was a stay at home mom, always attending her sons' sports activities and was always one of the loudest cheerers. Marianne and Eddie then moved to Fraserwood in 1984 and became farmers until Eddie passed away in 2001. She then moved to Vestureland Villa in Gimli, where she lived for the past 18 years.
Marianne was very active in Fraserwood, Gimli, and Winnipeg Beach. She was an active bowler and some of her favourite pastimes were bingo and playing crib. She was a long-time member of the Fraserwood Hall, and for many years, the Bingo Chair. In 2017, she was presented the Volunteer Dedication Award. She loved to spend time with her family, whether it was fishing or playing board games at the cabin. Mom was always the one you wanted on your team when it came to Trivial Pursuit. She was a huge curling fan and loved to watch the Winnipeg Jets and the Blue Bombers play; however, she did have a soft spot for the Edmonton Eskimos.
The family would like to thank the staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care during her last few days and the people from Palliative Health during her last couple of weeks at home. To Mom's fellow residents at Vesterland Villa, we thank you for being great friends and for your love and support through the years.
As per Marianne's wishes, a private family interment will take place at a later date.
Flowers are graciously declined; however, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Marianne's name.

FOREVER REMEMBERED,

  • We just today learnt of your Mom's passing. We met her at New Horizon Bowling a few years ago and I instantly was drawn to her. She was charismatic, down to earth: a very special lady and I know she will be kept alive in your memories. I am saddened by her passing and sending our deepest condolences to the family. • Sorry to hear of your loss. I lived two doors over from your place on Burrows. I was the babysitter when your folks would step out every once in awhile. Your folks were both great to be around. Learned a lot from your mom. My thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Lillian Sparks (Milovanovich) (Neighbour) on: Apr 11, 2020

  • We are very sorry to hear about Aunty Marrianne’s passing. Many of my childhood memories out at the farm include Aunty Marianne...in fact I can still hear her voice calling me, “Scotty” and her very distinct laugh. Over the last few years Aunty Marianne always made a point of asking my mom about my kids and especially about their hockey. She even came out to watch them play a few times in Gimli. Our condolences go out to the whole family - Scott, Susie, Evan, and Emily McMurtry - Posted by: Scott McMurtry (Great Nephew) on: Apr 09, 2020

  • We were so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear mom. We didn't meet her that often but felt like we knew her well as she was such a friendly person. Always seemed so full of fun and kindness. We will miss her when we visit out at Joe and Leslie's cabin. I think she lived life to the fullest and will have left her loving family so many wonderful memories. Hold them close and cherish them. • I'm so sorry to hear about your mom passing away. We lived two houses down from you on Burrows Ave back in the 60/70s. (I went to elementary school with Darrell). Your mom was my favorite neighbour and I loved going over to your house. She was friendly, welcoming and so easy going. I remember her being such a free spirit and always thought you guys were so lucky to have her for a mom. My deepest sympathies for your loss. - Posted by: Susan Randall (Milovanovich) (Neighbour ) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • So sorry to all of the Chorney family for your loss. Auntie Marianne was a wonderful woman. I have so many fond memories of spending time at the farm, whether that was visiting my grandma and her when they were berry picking (and stealing berries faster than they could pick them), long drives with her and Uncle Eddie to various fishing spots (and usually not catching very much although If there was only 1 fish it was always caught by Auntie Marianne), or just listening in when her and Grandma would be visiting at the farm. 1 memory that sticks in my head was when Uncle Eddie was sick and Auntie Marianne would drive him out to the field every day to visit while we were making hay, doing everything she could to make him happy and at peace in his last months at home. Such a sign of how wonderful she was. She will be missed. Love, Kyle and family. - Posted by: Kyle, Shannon and family (Great Nephew) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • For Lee, Darrell & Glenn and your families....sorry to have to say goodbye to your Mom. Marianne was my Mom’s (Olive) friend in Vestureland Villa for almost 20 years.
