ISOBEL BAIN
(SMITH)
June 17, 1925 - April 3, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Isobel Bain (Smith) announces her passing on April 3, 2020, at the age of 94.
Isobel was born in Govan, Saskatchewan on June 17, 1925, to Donald and Mary (Cameron) Smith. She was the eldest of three children and attended the country school at Wessebo for grades 1 to 10. She attended Govan High School for grades 11 and 12 and then attended Balfour Technical School in Regina from September 1943 to May 1944.
Growing up Isobel belonged to the 4-H Calf Club and had her own flock of purebred Oxford Down Sheep. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and maintained that membership for over 70 years.
Isobel joined the workforce in May of 1944 with the Royal Bank of Canada and worked at many branches in Saskatchewan: Wawota, Balcarres, Strasbourg, Lanigan, Meadow Lake, Rosetown and Saskatoon before transferring to Winnipeg in May of 1955. She retired from the Pembina and Oakenwald branch in June of 1985.
Isobel met her future husband in the early 1970s and was married to Douglas Bain on December 30, 1977. They moved to Sanford and continued to commute to Winnipeg for work. Doug died suddenly in July of 1986 and in 1989 Isobel moved back to Winnipeg.
Isobel was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Mary (Cameron) Smith, stepmother Edith Smith, sister and brother-in-law Doreen and Peter Hryn, brother and sister-in-law Glen and Anne Smith, uncles and aunts. She is survived by her nieces, Donna Hryn, Darlene (Kevin) Stainbrook, Darcy (Melvin) Hryn-Bird, Sheila (Wayne) Smith, nephews, David (Marilynn) Hryn and Shawn (Patricia) Smith; extended family John and Mary Hamer, Dianne (Brady and Amber) Fisher, Janie Marshall, and many cousins, friends and former customers.
Isobel will always be remembered for her smile, laugh and quick wit. She will be missed by many.
A celebration of Isobel's life will be organized at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation could be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Isobel was good friends with My Mom and Dad. I had my first savings account at RBC Oakenwald and Pembina. She gave me a loan to purchase my first truck. A 1951 Chev. I had several loans on old vehicles in my High School years. She had a great sense of humour and had a quick wit. Wonderful personality and a king lady. I was saddened to hear of this! - Posted by: Dave Belford (Family friend) on: May 21, 2020

  • Saddened to hear of Isobel's passing. I saw Isobel shopping a year or so ago at the grocery store. Her reason for being there was to buy cinnamon buns with cream cheese topping for a friend who couldn't get out. Always thinking of someone and how she could cheer them up. I visited Isobel sometimes weekly, if not, every two weeks. I can still hear her say to Mac, "Mac Mac, your girlfriend is coming". Sure enough, the dog would be at the window and then the door to greet me (of course, I always had treats for him!) Isobel was a dear person with many a story to tell. We certainly had our share of laughs over the years. She will be missed. Condolences to her family. Jackie N. - Posted by: Jackie N. (Friend) on: Apr 07, 2020

  • Isobel was a staple in the neighborhood and helped keep an eye on things. We were always welcome in her home for a visit and she always had some sweets for the kids. She always had a smile on her face and a story to tell. Our family would like to pass along our sincerest condolences to Isobel's family. She was definitely one of a kind and will be missed. - Posted by: Susan Sullivan (Former Neighbor/Friend) on: Apr 06, 2020

  • I only worked briefly with Ms. Bain at RBC but she was a legend. As a woman back in the day it was encouraging to see a successful woman in banking. She always seemed like breathe of fresh air.Condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Valerie Casavant (admirer/coworker) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • Coincidentally I was thinking of Isobel only a few months ago. I worked with Isobel in the early 80s at the RBC, Pembina & Oakenwald. I really admired the person that she was, and I had total respect for her. Truly a wonderful lady. My sincere condolences to her family. ❤️ - Posted by: Donna (Co-worker) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • I met Isobel when she was volunteering at Bairdmore School year ago. She supported the school through her RBC connection donating money for books, which was greatly appreciated! We always enjoyed passing her house on Tranquil Bay and seeing her beautiful dog at the fence. She was always so cheerful and great to chat with. She will be missed! - Posted by: Jane Romaniuk (acquaintance) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • As an older cousin Isobel has always been a part of my life. 25 years was a large gap when I was young but as I got older the age difference narrowed as we all discover as we mature. I never thought of Isobel as old until her last year at 94. She still loved clothes, shopping and especially meeting people she either worked with or the clients she worked for. She always was surprised and very very pleased when a former Royal Bank customer remembered her and spoke to her at the grocery store or at an event. The fact that she always remembered them was not considered unusual at all to her. Isobel is in a better place whereas mine will be a less full because of her passing. I will miss her. - Posted by: June Young (Friend and cousin ) on: Apr 04, 2020

  • First met Isobel in 1976 at the RBC branch at Pembina and Oakenwald where she approved my first car loan when I was 21. Then her husband Doug sold my wife and I a Chevy from Southwood Chevrolet a few years later. Kept in touch over the years, always enjoyed her smile and her humor. Then a few years back she asked me to sell her house in Richmond West which I did. I always remember how fairly she treated me back when I was getting that first loan. When we were getting ready to list her house, she'd have me over for tea or coffee and we had numerous wonderful conversations. She is one of those people who just stick out in your life and invoke a smile. I was sorry to read of her passing, but I know I will never forget her bright eyes and sparkling smile. My condolences to her nieces and nephews. - Posted by: Cliff king (Past client, acquaintance) on: Apr 04, 2020
