WALTER MANULAK
April 18, 1935 - April 3, 2020

Suddenly but peacefully, Walter Manulak passed on April 3, 2020, at the age of 84.
He is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mary (nee Tokaruk); and by brothers, Myron (Blanche), Leonard, and Eugene. He is survived by brother Ron (Annette), sister Darlene (Larry) Luhowy, sister Patricia (Brian) Dziver and sister-in-law Muriel.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Evangeline (Slon); their children, Eugene, Wesley (Tracy), Lisa (Trevor) and Daniel; grandchildren, Crystal (Braden) Thordarson, Justine (Ian) and Reece, and great- granddaughter Oaklee.
Walter grew up on the farm where his grandparents homesteaded in 1899 at Seech, near Oakburn, MB. He attended St. John School from grades one to eight and Oakburn School from grades nine to twelve. After completing his senior matriculation, he enrolled at Normal School and earned his teaching diploma at the age of 19. His teaching career took him to the rural schools of Braddock, St. John, Oakburn High School and Rossdale (Lockport). After moving to Winnipeg in 1961, he taught in Transcona and continued his education at University of Manitoba, earning his B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees. The last 24 years of his career were in the St. Vital School Division, retiring in 1989.
The Orthodox faith and Ukrainian heritage and language were immensely important to Walter, and that was reflected through his endless hours of volunteer work for the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. He also served on the board of St. Andrew's College (U of M campus), was a member of the Order of St. Andrew at the local and national levels, and a serving member of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada. He loved to organize fundraisers and enjoyed the comradery of working in a busy kitchen.
Walter was a passionate gardener. He and Evangeline earned many ribbons at Transcona Garden Club show and they shared their harvest generously with friends, family and neighbours. When he wasn't gardening, Walter could be found picking berries and mushrooms in the bush with his friends. He was a master of cribbage, puzzles and Jumble.
Nothing was more joyous to Walter than family gatherings. Whether it was a family reunion, wedding, anniversary, or holiday celebration, the preparations had to be perfect, and the food plentiful. Those memories will be long lasting.
A private funeral service and interment will take place. A memorial service will be held at a later date, check website for details.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 3S4.

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • I was fortunate to have Mr. Manulak as a teacher 35 years ago. His passion for teaching left a life-long impression. Today I strive to teach my children with the same vigor and intensity that Walter invested in our classes. My deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: F Ghahramani (Student) on: May 12, 2022

  • KHystos Voskress! Vo Istinu Voskres! Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Walter and his wife Evangeline visited our parents frequently at Arlington Haus, Holy Family Home, and even at the Stonewall General Hospital, as well as for anniversaries, birthdays, funerals, and memorials. Walter graced us with his kind and caring presence as Master of Ceremonies for many of these functions, for which we are most grateful. "Human beings are not born to die, but die to be resurrected!" Leonardo Boff, Brazilian Theologian. May God bless Walter for the good things he has done, forgive him his sins, and grant him repose with the just, and may he rest in God's Eternal Memory! - Posted by: JoAnne Juce; Rosemary Dzus; James Juce; Esther Juce & Howard R. • Mr. Manulak was my Ukrainian teacher for three years at Hastings Jr High. My friend Kim Cornwell and I have hundreds of stories of our experiences learning all about the language, culture and traditions of the Ukrainian people. We speak of him often, all these years later. What wonderful gifts he gave us, sharing his personal family stories. Our class even went on a road trip to some small Manitoba towns visiting places near and dear to him. May God welcome him at the pearly gates with open arms and choirs of angels singing his name. - Posted by: Chris Peers (Lesyk) (Former student at Hastings) on: Apr 18, 2020

  • Mr. Manulak was my math teacher when I was at Hastings Junior High. He was such a character! Interesting, so smart and loved to do anything Ukrainian. Like many of my former classmates, some of whom have already written above, Mr. Manulak was a presence and one did indeed pay attention for fear of missing something and then being under Mr. Manulak's scrutiny. A position I for one did not relish. He was a great teacher though I did not really understand that at the time. Wisdom comes with age I suppose. I am so glad he was my teacher and though, at times, he was some what intimidating, I have fond memories of him at school, teaching all of us, trying to get the information through to us, guiding us in mathematics, all things Ukrainian and in life. He made a positive impact on many lives and will be missed. - Posted by: Sidney Macaw (Former Student at Hastings) on: Apr 11, 2020

  • My Condolences to the Manulak family. I was a former junior high student, grades 8/9 at Hastings Junior High. I had Mr Manulak as a math teacher as well as a Ukrainian teacher. He was very strict, {as parent of 5 grown children, I'm glad he was}, and he also encouraged you to learn. He was especially fun in Ukrainian class. I also remember seeing Mr Manulak working in the Kitchen organizing food preparations for the Kyiv Pavillion, food was always great tasting. - Posted by: Linda Kozakewich {Carson} (Former Student, Kyiv Pavillion {Tidy Team Volunteer}) on: Apr 09, 2020
