CHARLES TURNLEY

On April 6, 2020, at 91 years of age, our dad decided to leave this stage of his life on his terms with dignity, stubbornness and humour.
His first date with our mom was at the Chocolate Shop on Portage Ave. and their love flourished from there, producing four bratty kids, Paul, Brenda, David and his favourite child Karen (hey I'm writing this
ha-ha). He loved us all deeply and made every effort to keep the family together by taking us camping, buying cottages and toys over the years. Our dad would attempt anything at any age, he didn't think you had to be the best, but you had to just try. He downhill skied, snowmobiled and tubed behind the boat at Falcon Lake in his 80's and was still a great golfer up until this past summer playing with his kids and grandchildren. Another of his passions was pool, playing with residents, Jack and Frank, and others from Seine River Retirement Home, which dad referred to as his castle. After every family get-together we had to finish with card games. He always had a few F bombs with David, but always in fun.
Orphaned at 10, he survived with determination and pure hard work. His upbringing didn't define him. He chose to be an amazing man and did amazing things for people, most of which we will never know. He started working for Salisbury House at 16 and ended up managing 24 stores. Recently he still met up once a month with his Salisbury buddies for breakfast. He couldn't hear much the last few years, but just loved being in their company.
Chuck was predeceased by his wife Ruth and his brothers, George and Pat. He leaves behind his brother Peter and sister Patsy, children/spouses, Paul/Cheryl, Brenda, David /Kim, Karen/Rob, grandchildren/spouses, Megan/Matt, Shannon/Cole, great-granddaughter Maeve, Daniel/Ryan, Shauna, Marika/Raf, Riese
Thank you to MAID for granting his final wish and the nurses in Comfort Care at Victoria Hospital.
Now you can go see mom. I know you've missed her terribly. We're super proud of you dad, papa, best friend, city grampa.

  • My deepest condolences to your family. I met Chuck at Seine River retirement, where my Mom is. As I am there everyday, I would often see Chuck playing pool. Always with a smile and something positive to say, he would want me to play every time I saw him! Sometimes I was in a hurry, and couldn’t, but sometimes I just dropped everything and hung out with him and the ‘boys’. Or I brought my Mom down to watch, which she loved. He was always kind, always had a hug for my Mom, never let anything bother him and you would never know the world wasn’t a perfect place! We always left it at a tie, that way we would always have to pick up where we left off, and no one was a loser. Always a winner! I will carry your attitude Chuck and miss your smile. God speed and next time, you get to break! ❤️ - Posted by: Monica Huisman (Pool playing friend at Seine River ) on: Apr 18, 2020

  • My wife Diane and I met Chuck after my wife's Aunt Emily moved into Seine River Retirement Centre. Chuck was one of the first to greet Emily and make her feel welcome and comfortable. My wife Diane (Franklin) was surprised and happy to learn that she and Chuck's son David went to the same schools together. It was a nice connection with Chuck. I had the privilege of playing pool with Chuck a few times. He was good and was a gracious when he beat me which was often. He always said hello when we visited with Emily and even after when Emily had to move and we dropped by the 'castle' he always came over and asked how she and we were. A fine man with courage and a gentleman's spirit. Condolences to his family and many friends. - Posted by: Gary Walker (Friend) on: Apr 11, 2020
