MARTHA GROENING
(nee FROESE)

Martha Groening passed away on April 9, 2020, at age 80, at West Park Manor. She was born February 29, 1940, in Winkler.
Survived by her children, Wanda (Dave) Kolida, Rod Groening (Evelyn Bolton, Rob, Amelia and Cole); grandson Dawson Kolida; siblings, Sara, Mary, Jake (Diane), Eve (Aaron Hildebrand) and Anne, sister-in-law Helen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Burton; her daughter in infancy Audrey; her sons, Grant and Calvin; her parents, Reverend George and Sarah Froese; her sister Kay (Peter); her brothers, John (Mary) and George; brothers-in-law, Frank Rempel, Peter Derksen, and sister-in-law Lena Froese.
Martha grew up in Rose Farm area north of Horndean. She helped on the farm and was active in the church - singing in the choir and playing piano. She accepted the Lord as her saviour at a young age. She married her handsome high school sweetheart, Burt at the age of 19. They lived in Morden where Grant was born. They then moved to Winnipeg and continued raising their family in Windsor Park. Mom always said the soil in Morden produced a much better garden than the clay in Windsor Park. Both her and Dad sang in a group and loved to sing together while Mom played piano and Dad one of his many instruments. They enjoyed visiting extended family where music was also played, attended church every Sunday followed by lunches out (favourite was Chi-Chi's) and took many vacations both near and far as a couple and as a family (Rainbow Falls being a favourite family spot with the hibachi and homemade burgers). Mom loved flowers, gardening, baking, cooking, singing and playing piano. Burt spoiled her with love notes and was a sweet, kind, gentle husband. They were blessed with 47 and a half years of marriage. She had special bonds with each of her children always telling them she loved them and never leaving without a hug. During the past 13 years she spent as much time as she could with her grandson Dawson. He was so precious to her. She helped shape who he is today with his kind and loving nature.
Even in her days of suffering her faith remained strong. She had immense courage and resilience.
Due to COVID-19 a service will take place at a later date.

  • I knew Martha in school grades 1-9. I was devastated when she discontinued school. After that we have had virtually no contact. I note that she lost most of her family in the last years of her life. May she rest in a better place. - Posted by: Milly Dyck (Friend in school) on: Apr 11, 2020
