CATHERINE ANNE FASANO
(nee AIRD)
May 1, 1931 - April 18, 2020

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mom Cathy Fasano, at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her children, Gary (June), Susan (Lorne), and David (Lori); her grandchildren, Dan (Suzy), Elizabeth (Dan), Sean, Evan, Alison (Chris), and Scott; her great-grandchildren, Taeya, Emily, Lily, and Carson; her sister Irene Bullen (Norm), sister-in-law Teri Aird, nieces, nephews and their families, as well as many friends.
Cathy was predeceased by her loving husband Thom, her parents, Don and Angela, and her brothers, Ron and Jack.
Mom was born in Winnipeg in 1931, the oldest of four siblings. She grew up in the West End on Balmoral Street, later moving to Victor Street. She attended John M. King School, General Wolfe Junior High School, and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. Growing up, she spent her summers on her aunts' farms in Treherne and Notre Dame de Lourdes. Mom then attended business school and worked for a few years before Gary was born.
It was at Daniel Mac she met the love of her life, Thom, and they wed in May, 1953. Family was very important. Mom and dad raised their children together and spent time at curling games, rugby matches, track meets, hockey, lacrosse and soccer games. Mom was an active member of Christ Church Anglican, singing in the choir, organizing and attending outings with the "Tuesday at Two" group, and volunteering at the annual plant stand; she made many good friends and memories there. Mom was on the Parent Council of the Winnipeg Flying "M" Athletic Club for several years. She was also a long-time member of Deer Lodge Curling Club, where she was one of the organizers of the Wednesday Ladies, a league that continues to this day.
Mom loved having picnics. They ranged from kids' birthdays to grand multi-family affairs organized with her best friend Betty Letham. She loved to travel. Unfortunately, dad, not so much. So, while they did visit Scotland, England, and Halifax among other places, they spent most summers enjoying the cottage at Bird Lake. After dad's retirement, they spent their winters in Mesa, AZ, enjoying the sun, the golf, and the socializing.
Mom had a knack for helping others. If there was a need, there was mom. Visiting family and friends in hospital, feeding, supporting, running errands, helping. She never tired. Mom also had a special "gift" for pinching a penny, stretching a dollar, and she could sniff out a bargain at 40 paces. We're sure she's the reason The Bay is still in business!
Mom was very fortunate in that, up until the stroke in February, she lived independently in her own home, getting around on her own steam, doing her own thing. She was a fun and generous lady and we will miss her dearly.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of mom's life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Lori Fasano Scholarship at the College of Pharmacy U of M. (give.umanitoba.ca/lorifasanoscholarship), Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or Diabetes Canada.

"Rest eternal grant unto her,
O Lord and let light perpetual shine on her.
May she rest in peace."

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My mother Matilda and I would like to send our condolences to your family. Matilda and Cathy were friends for a number of years after meeting at Christ Church. They sang in the choir and worked together at several church events over the years. Matilda was out of the country during Cathy's passing and has only just returned to discover that she had left us. We remember her as a kind and generous woman who was quick to welcome and offer her friendship to my family when we first joined the congregation. Even as children, my sisters and I experienced her warmth, humor and boundless spirit. Matilda would like you to know that Cathy was her Sister in Christ. We are deeply sadden to learn of her passing and may she rest in peace. - Posted by: Janet Idiong (Daugther of her friend Matilda Idiong) on: Nov 03, 2020

  • I am so glad to have had a visit with Aunt Cath at my Mum and Dad's 60th anniversary dinner. I will remember her as a fan of Clarence Tellenius, Birthday Parties and family gatherings with Uncle Thom and Anne Fasano and visiting with the family when I was in Winnipeg. My condolences to Susan, David and Gary and their fanilies on the loss of your Mother! She will be remembered always! - Posted by: Patricia Bullen (Niece) on: May 19, 2020

  • Condolences on your loss. Your mom was always involved in the activities at Christ Church and always seemed to have boundless energy. She was also one of my mom's (June Russell) classmates at Daniel McIntyre many years ago and when they met at one of the activities at Christ Church they took time to talk about the fun they had back then. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Janice Clarke (Former secretary, Christ Church) on: Apr 29, 2020

  • To all of Cathy’s family: we felt so sad to hear of your mom’s passing. It was always fun working with Cathy at Christ Church... the plantstand, garage sales, senior dinners, etc. Deepest sympathy from us in your loss. May you find peace.
