MARK JOSHUA ZINK

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, Mark Joshua Zink, beloved family member, passed away at the age of 39, in Busan, South Korea.
Mark was born in 1980 in Winnipeg, MB, to Rodney and Evelyn (Yeske) Zink, and grew up just outside of Oakbank, MB. He received his science degree from the University of Manitoba in 2003, and he shortly thereafter moved to South Korea where over a period of 15 years he taught English to local hagwon (English school) students. He was unmarried.
Mark had a wide array of interests, including drawing cartoons and amassing dozens of binders of them, performing at his local comedy club, speaking at Toastmasters, exercising, learning multiple foreign languages, and learning multiple computer programming languages. Not only that, but he was also an avid reader, having read hundreds of thousands of pages of books over the course of his lifetime and corresponding with the authors of some of his favourites. Mark himself was also a prolific writer, crafting numerous essays and sending them to his family to read. He also kept an extensive journal of his thoughts and opinions.
Mark is survived by his parents, Rodney and Evelyn; his sister Michelle, her husband David, and their daughter Mylah; and his brother Terry and his wife Carol.
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, a memorial service will be postponed till a date later this year. When those details are sorted out, his family will post them.
In honour of Mark's longtime working with kids, donations may be made to the children's hospital of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I knew Mark from Busan Toastmasters (BTM). He was about the smartest individual l ever met. His artwork was ingenious. A great guy to know. I wish l could have reached out to him more than l did. - Posted by: Clarence "CJ" Hodges (Toastmasters colleague ) on: Jul 17, 2024

  • I knew Mark from university, and we'd kept sporadic touch over the years. I was reminiscing with some friends about Mark, realized it had been a while and went to go look him up. I found out about him today. I'm heartbroken, as is my wife Andrea. He did several comic panels of us poking at "Fögg" and "Andrea," which we treasure still to this day. Our heartfelt condolences -- Mark was a rare find, and we'll keep his memory. - Sean + Andrea Fogg - Posted by: Sean Fogg (Friend) on: Sep 17, 2023

  • Mark was by far one of the most intriguing individuals l ever met. As a TOASTMASTERS colleague l thought he was borderline genius. His astute and active mind came up with quips that were evident of a superior imagination. His demise stunned me for a few moments. And after l regained composure l realized he was in a world/society that he incessantly sought to understand; surrounded by the complacent attitudes of an environment that made little sense. His kindness is greatly missed. - Posted by: Clarence "CJ" Hodges (Acquaintance ) on: Apr 08, 2023

  • I remember feeling extremely gutted when I heard the news about Mark, as he was one of the nicer people I'd had the pleasure to meet in South Korea. Mark had so many interests that it seemed as if he did more in a day than most did all week, which I admired. When I'd see him the conversation would go in so many directions, from comedy, to hockey, to politics, to pop culture--and the scene in Busan is that much sadder without his presence. He'll be missed. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Johnny Ioannidis (Friend) on: Dec 29, 2021

  • I took over from Mark as a teacher at an English cram school in Daejeon when I first arrived in Korea at 21 in 2007. Mark showed great kindness to me, insisting on buying me dinner almost every night, showing me around the neighborhood and making me feel comfortable. It made such a lasting impression on me and I'm eternally grateful to him. We lost contact over the years and I was very shocked sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends who knew what a kind and playful person he was. - Posted by: James Devereux (Friend) on: Nov 11, 2020

  • I got to know Mark as a fellow expat Canadian at Gwangan Beach in South Korea. He was always up for trying different things and was enjoying his life. I am sorry to hear of his untimely passing. Regards and condolences to his family. - Posted by: Daniel Serrouya (Friend from Gwangan Beach) on: Oct 13, 2020

  • Mark and I first met at 2013 at Gwangan Beach. We played beach volleyball every weekend and had dinner together afterwards. Mark was an amazing friend. He loved drawing comedic cartoons, programming, new technologies like bitcoin, and travelling (over 30 countries, as far as I know). My condolence to Mark's family and friends. - Posted by: Sajad Rahmdel (Friend) on: Jun 07, 2020

  • I am really shocked by Mark’s passing. It really reminded me how life is really so short. I also never knew how amazingly talented he truly was and is. I will remember how polite and caring he was. He was always joking about something. Now he is with Jesus and enjoying heaven Will see u someday my dear cousin. You will be missed by many people. You are also loved by so many people. My condolences to the family. He left a void in our hearts that no one can fill. - Posted by: Joelle (Cousin) on: Jun 03, 2020

  • Mark was probably the youngest person to join the toastmaster club in Oakbank...and he added the joy of youth and his own full and fun personality. I remember his first outlandish speech, (to us older members) alluding to some criminal past. We were all aghast until we got to know Mark and his ability to come up with those hilarious, shocking scenarios and make us believe them. I could cajole with Mark and banter about ideas and future projects. Knowing Mark he had a full and productive and hopefully happy life. I’m sorry it ended so soon. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Mae Vermeulen (Same toastmaster club) on: May 04, 2020

  • Mark and I were members of the Prairie Voices Toastmasters club together. I appreciated his creativity in his speaking and the enthusiasm he brought to his work. He was an original thinker and someone who encouraged me to dig deeper to be more creative. I’m sure those qualities made him a wonderful instructor. My sympathies to his family. - Posted by: Bev Doern (Toastmaster colleague) on: May 04, 2020

  • Everytime I talked to Mark he was always very nice. He never had any negative comments about anything we talked about. He was always quite quiet. I'm very sorry for your loss. He's was gone too soon. - Posted by: Andrea (Grew up with him in Elementary school) on: May 02, 2020
