ELISABETH HUPPERTZ

Peacefully on March 4, 2020, Lisa Huppertz passed away at the age of 99.
Lisa leaves to cherish her memories, in Germany, her stepdaughter Waltraud von den Bergen, stepson-in-law Dieter Stoffregen, and grandchildren, Martina and Cornelia Stoffregen, Gordon and Patrick von den Bergen, as well as three great-grandchildren, and in Winnipeg, her nephew Ewald Reinholdt (Marlene) and their daughters, Angela Gaspar (Joe), Loretta Reinholdt (Andy) and their grandchildren, and many friends in Gimli and Winnipeg. She was predeceased in 1992 by her husband Arnold and in 2019 by her stepdaughter Ursula Stoffregen.
Lisa was born on June 14, 1920, in Hamburg, Germany and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1951. She worked for two years at Parker's Ladies Wear and for the next ten years at the Eaton's Alteration Department for Ladies Wear, she was a qualified dressmaker by trade. In 1959 Lisa married Arnold Huppertz and they moved to Gimli in 1963, where they owned and operated the Lake Inn Restaurant. Arnold and Lisa worked very well together as a team and, after selling the restaurant, managed the Gimli Trailer Park during the summer months for several years until their retirement. Lisa was very active in the community. For a number of years she was the secretary for the Rural Municipality and Town of Gimli Development Corporation and a leader in the 4-H Club. She was a member of the German Society of Winnipeg and of the German Canadian Congress. In Gimli, she became a Life Member of the Gimli Women's Institute, a Life Member of the Gimli Old Timers Association and for many years was the treasurer of both organizations.
After retirement in 1983 Lisa joined the Gimli New Horizons Club and was involved in many activities. Lisa was their treasurer for many years, became a Life Member, was the Bingo Chairperson for 20 years, stepping down when she turned 90. Over the years, Lisa travelled extensively in Europe, all over Canada and the USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, and on many cruises. She enjoyed all those trips tremendously.

  • Mrs Huppertz was my sewing teacher for several of my teen age years. She was a gifted seamstress who patiently taught her students to hand stitch, baste, fit a zipper, lay and cut a pattern, hand make button holes and meticulously finish a garment on the inside as perfect as the outside. About fifteen years ago our paths crossed again when she visited the hospital where I worked. As I called her name, Mrs Huppertz, from the waiting room, her first comment to me was to thank me for the formal greeting. I smiled and said, you don't remember me from 4-H all those years ago...When I told her my name she was pleased to see me. We visited a bit while she waited for her appointment and I shared with her how much I'd appreciated the skills she taught to me thirty years ago. - Posted by: Kimberly Rudney Gallant (Student) on: Jun 01, 2020

  • My condolences to Lisa’s family. I worked for Lisa and Arnold as a teenager and university student at the Lake Inn Restaurant and they were a great team! I got to know them well over the years. I had a good visit with Lisa just before she left Gimli last year. She was a strong, amazing lady! - Posted by: Linda Einarson (Friend) on: May 09, 2020
