MARK STEPHEN BUIST
February 13, 1986 - May 2, 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Mark Buist on May 2, 2020.
Mark's death is deeply grieved by his mother Myrna (Rick) Kraynyk-Cooper, father Dr. Nigel Buist, brother Chad (Joelle) Buist, stepsister Jenn (Matt), stepbrother Chris (Claire), nieces and nephews, Coralina, Brooks, Beckham, Caleb, Colton and Jersey, godmother Vickie Kennedy and her daughters, Lisa and Jana, and special friend Kelsey McCall and her family.
Mark will be deeply missed by his and Kelsey's dog Oakley; whom Mark rescued as a puppy.
Mark grew up in Fort Frances. He had many friends and interests, including becoming a chess champion at age nine. He also liked to play sports, excelling especially at hockey as a talented goalie, playing Jr. A level.
As a young man, Mark moved to Winnipeg and began studies at U of M where he was a very bright student. As an adult, he continued playing hockey and enjoyed watching sports, such as football. For work, Mark became a skilled craftsman and worked on many projects, including building many homes in Winnipeg. He was very proud of his work and he worked hard to build his business "Just ReMarkable Homes," which was a source of pride and achievement for him.
Mark was an animal lover who rescued and cared for any dog in need. He of course loved his dog Oakley, who was very special to him and spent a great deal of his time and energy making Oakley's life truly great. Above all, Mark always had a strong desire to help others. He was always willing to put others before himself, which made him the wonderful person he was. He even had recently begun to conquer his new dream of becoming a firefighter and we know that he would have been an outstanding one.
Mark was also a resilient person and was a cancer survivor at a young age. Mark always managed to pull through when faced with life's challenges; with the love and support of his mother Myrna; his father Nigel; his brother Chad; his stepdad Rick; his friends, Jana and Lisa and their mother Vickie and his friend Kelsey and her mother Kathi. Mark always managed to find a way to come out stronger.
Mark was a very outgoing and social guy, making friends and meeting many people. Mark was known for his contagious positivity and always had a sense of humour. He had a way of making everyone around him feel cared for and special. He left an impression on each person he met.
For Mark, family was very important to him. He loved them very much and always appreciated them as a part of his life and valued their support and love. Although not in his family, Kelsey McCall was a special part of Mark's life. They went through much of their lives together and remained best friends who were always there for each other. Mark will always live in Kelsey's heart.
Mark will be remembered and mourned forever. His family and friends are heartbroken. His death at a young age is so very tragic. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Mark has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be announced in his home town of Fort Frances and in Winnipeg at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • It’s coming up on 2 years and it still doesn’t feel real to us. Mark was such a great man we welcomed him into our family as an uncle to our children. They loved him and shared a special bond, he loved Oakley as if he were his child. We gifted Oakley to Mark when he was lonely years ago best decision ever made, I could talk for days about how much we loved him but nobody would understand how deeply our family misses him. Until we meet again buddy ❤️ - Posted by: Jessica&Guytano (Family) on: Mar 26, 2022
