ROBERT (BOB) JAMES BROWN

Bob Brown passed away peacefully on May 5, 2020, with his loving wife Jennifer and his beloved daughter Kristin by his side, after a long battle with another cancer.
Bob was born on June 3, 1945 to Morley and Alice (Hetherington) Brown. All his life he possessed a strong love of nature and a great curiosity towards the world. He was a very gifted person: a talented musician, a Master teacher, a scientist, and a business person. He was also very loving and blessed with a good humour.
Bob taught high school Biology for over 30 years. When he retired from teaching he worked for 15 years as a Science Advisor for the Province of Manitoba, where he ran a very successful, elite Science competition.
Bob was joyful, funny, kind and generous, intellectually curious and well read, a great conversationalist, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a strong man of integrity. When asked about his 20 year battle with various cancers, he would only say that he was 'soldiering on'.
Bob is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jennifer McKenna; his sister Linda Wessels (Tony), Lindsay, Gracie and Connor; his son Jamie Brown (Rachel), Findlay, Liam and Owen; his daughter Susie Grise (Craig Matthews), Ketri, Max, Soleil, and Louis; and his daughter Kristin Brown (Jack Ouellet), James and Jordie.
Bob was a beloved member of the McKenna family for 30 years, and will be greatly missed by Paul McKenna (Sandra Brown), Miguel and Hannah; Chuck McKenna (Elaine), Ryan, Kaitlin Major (Jeremy), Owyn and Noah; Ed McKenna (Andrea Labossiere), Jesse.
Bob was predeceased by his father and mother, Morley and Alice Brown, and by his brother Dave (Les, Evan), as well as numerous other family members.
At Bob's request, no service will be held. Cremation has taken place.

Good night sweet Prince,
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

  • I had the pleasure of not only being in his home room but also in his grade 10 science class. In science class, I REALLY got to know Mr. Brown's humor. One fine day, we were studying electricity. The student I normally sat with was not there that day and Mr. Brown used this spot to demonstrate a static wheel. On this apparatus there was a crank on each side. As Mr.Brown cranked the wheels, electricity started to jump across two electrodes at the top. Picture lightning. As he cranked it faster and faster, more voltage began to flow. It was pretty cool from my view. Then Mr.Brown, that lovely man, did the unthinkable!!! He grabbed one electrode and then grabbed the metal ring around the table, that I just so happened to be touching with both my arms and my leg. Suddenly I got the shock of my life and I jumped back into the next row! My first response was, "WHAT WAS THAT!!" Without skipping a beat, Mr.Brown responds, THAT WAS STATIC DISCHARGE!!! That was a pretty cool experiment! I tell this story to my students every year!!! Your legend lives on! - Posted by: Robin Mondor (Student ) on: Nov 12, 2020

  • I'm saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Brown. He was my Biology teacher at Tec Voc. He was a great teacher and one of my favorite classes. He had no problem kicking us girls out of class after our "margarita lunches" at Chi Chi's! May you rest peacefully Mr. Brown. - Posted by: Chrystal Parisian (Prymac) (Former Student at Tec Voc in 1992-94) on: Nov 12, 2020

  • You never know a friend for long enough. Some of our best memories of the time my wife and I shared with Bob and Jennifer at the cottage, were the quiet afternoons chatting about Bob's many interests in Science, birds, History, books he was devouring and the quirks of life in general. Bob was fun-loving and loved life in a quiet, unassuming way. Summers without his kind presence will not quite be the same but there is no doubt he'll be there in our memories and laughter. - Posted by: Romeo G. Lemieux (fellow cottager and friend) on: May 12, 2020

  • Bob was a valued colleague and friend for almost 20 years. As the scientific advisor to the Sanofi-Aventis Biotechnology Challenge, Bob recruited and mentored hundreds of outstanding high school to participate in what became the most successful of this type in Canada. His outstanding scientific and educational knowledge coupled with his excellent interpersonal skills with students and educators resulted in large numbers of Manitoba students achieving at national and international levels. As a person, Bob was caring, gentle and humble. After our retirements, my wife and I enjoyed getting together with Bob for coffee every now and then to find out what he was up to and to hear the latest interesting scientific findings he had come across. Though Bob was no longer a teacher, he was always an educator. To us, he was an inspiration and a friend. - Posted by: Norm and Michelle Lee (Friends and Colleagues) on: May 12, 2020
