DR. SANFORD (SANDY) T. FLEMING
Sandy was born in Rainy River, Ontario on July 19, 1932, to Bert and Daisy Fleming. His father passed away while Sandy was still of school age, so he completed his primary education while boarding at St. John's Ravenscourt. Sandy's intellect and love of all things scientific made for a natural movement towards medical school and he became a doctor of Internal Medicine with sub specialties in nephrology and cardiology. A doctor's doctor, he will be remembered by his colleagues for his dedication, his attention to detail and his calm, reassuring manner.
When summer came, as soon as Saturday rounds at the hospital were over, the family would load up the station wagon and head to their cabin in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. It was a place of great joy for him.
Medicine was always a passionate interest for him, but Sandy was also a Master qualifier in Bridge, a challenging snooker player to all who would take him on (most notably, his friend Richard Klapecki at the Manitoba Club), an enthusiastic curler with his fellow physician friends, and the key teacher (with endless patience) of ping pong, card games, crokinole - and the art of stock trading - for all his grandchildren.
Sandy was funny and irreverent. He loved nothing better than a large family meal with lots of delicious food, engaging conversation, and good wine. Especially if that meal ended with a scotch.
Sandy leaves to remember his memory his devoted wife of 63 years, Joan Fleming; his children, Harvard (Nancy), Alex (Carla), and David; and his grandchildren, Andrew (Erika), Justin, Eric (Alana), Jared, Quinn, and Rebecca.
The family extends their gratitude to all the talented and compassionate staff of St. Boniface Hospital (some of whom Sandy had taught during his tenure), and Parkview Place - most especially, Gloria, for her enduring, thoughtful, and kind care.
As per his wishes, a later private family gathering will take place at the cabin that he loved so much. He will be missed by us all.

Grandpa was an anchoring presence in my life. He taught me how to appreciate the world, the myriad complexities within it. I often took books from him to read, about medicine and physics and the world at large. And while I didn't go into any of the fields he encouraged me in, he fostered a deep spirit of scientific appreciation for the world. I remember long conversations with him on the driveway, fixing cracks he insisted he could do better than any hired man. I remember long conversations with his wife, my grandma, where he would chime in and contradict us, all in good faith. Grandpa Fleming was a good man. Rest in peace, grandpa. - Posted by: Jared Fleming (Grandson) on: Sep 01, 2020

I have so much fond memories of Dr. Fleming around my sister's wonderfully lavish Christmas table surrounded by his noisy lovable family. He will be missed and his family is in our hearts and thoughts. - Posted by: Crystal Kolt (Alex Fleming's sister-in-law) on: May 19, 2020
