I was just talking to my girlfriend about who our favourite teacher was. Mr Sernyk was who I mentioned to her. Grade five at McLeod school was such a memorable year thanks to Dan. The fish fries he said for us and the McDonald's lunches because he said "just testing you" definitely made us all listen and hope he said those three words. Cutting through his yard to get into the golf course was always exciting until he told us he didnt mind! Mr Sernyk put the fishing bug into me and may have been responsible for myself falling in love with nw ontario and settling where I could be on the water every day. Thank you Mr Sernyk for the memories. - Posted by: Scott MacNeill (Student) on: Aug 16, 2021

Pat, it is one year later; have just read all the beautiful on-line tributes to Dan. Pierre and I do hope that those endearing memories from co-workers, friends and fishing buddies have helped during what must have been a difficult past year. We miss that big guy! - Posted by: Pierre and Pat Chevrier (Friend) on: May 18, 2021

I was so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Pat I hope you and Daisy continue to help each other through each day. My condolences to all of your family. I was a new teacher when I first met Dan. It sort of went like this,"Hi I'm Dan ... Do you fish?" Needless to say I "DO" fish now! Dan introduced me to the lifelong adventure that is angling with your friends. A quiet day on the water is simply beautiful amongst the wilderness of nature. We have traveled together on many trips throughout Manitoba by car, truck, boat and even airplane. Before we took off Dan insisted I sit in the co-pilots seat. That was just how Dan was! Dan hosted many Fishing Derbies and I was fortunate to help out on many of them. No item was left unattended. I will always remember the huge smiles on his face when the horn would blow to signal the start of a derby. I am proud to say my boys also "Do" fish now. Dan you will never be replaced, but you will always be remembered. - Posted by: Jeffrey Kelsey (Friend & Fishing Buddy) on: Jun 01, 2020

Dan was a special character and no one will ever fill those big shoes of his! These past two winters in Mesa were just not the same without him. My thoughts and prayers are with you Pat, as you start down a new path in life. - Posted by: Gladys Bellamy (friend) on: May 27, 2020

My condolences to you Pat. It must be a quiet house with Dan's energy gone. Our fishing trips with Dan, Bruce, Barry, and Neils will be cherished for my life. Even though we haven't fished together for almost 20 yrs, Dan still speaks to me with his fishing tips and I wear white socks as I was instructed with one of Dan's fishing memos. - Posted by: Chuck Leibert (Friend) on: May 26, 2020

Pat; I offer you my heartfelt condolences from me and my family, who Dan befriended and taught. I first met Dan in 1990 when I started as a caretaker at John de Graff. He was a very genuine, caring soul. He even brought gifts for my babies when they were born. Over the years we evolved from just colleagues at work to good friends. I will miss him dearly. Our hockey pools will never be the same with his humorous presence. May God bless him and give you peace knowing he was a beloved person. - Posted by: Richard Gasior (Friend) on: May 23, 2020

Dan was gifted with a very warm, generous and compassionate heart - well liked by everyone and even more so by his many present and past furry friends. Our dog, Nikko was one of them. He would always gift her with many assorted doggy treats. "Dan, the Man" was an advocate for all creatures big and small. Our sincere and deepest condolences to Pat and family. He will truly be missed. Terry and Irene Spooner - Posted by: Terry and Irene Spooner (friends) on: May 23, 2020

My condolences to Pat on the passing of your husband Dan and Larry on your brother. We both grew up within 6 blocks of each other, went to different elementary schools and got to know each other more in high school. We were in ballroom dancing club. Dan for being a large person 6'4 and 202 was light on his feet. We played basketball together. We found each other again after 50+ years. We were living in North Kildonan and thru our mutual friend Vernon with the Miles Mac retirement group. We had many years of brown water in NK and it was thru Dan's leadership, that this was finally resolved. With his background in engineering, Dan offered his help and leadership in solving other issues in NK. I sometimes think Dan might have had a speed dial button on his phone to Councillor Jeff Browaty. It is so nice to see someone giving back to the community like Dan did, in charity work, fundraising, local politics and events. He had such a nice outgoing personality. After a gap of 50+ years we were catching up on people and events that we missed in that time. I am very fortunate to have known Dan and have a lot of fond memories of him. He was well educated, gifted in artistic and athletic talents and you might say an all around great person/friend. You will be missed but not forgotten. God bless. - Posted by: dederick, Colin (class mate ) on: May 23, 2020
