BERNIE KEVIN SHAW
June 12, 1956 - May 16, 2020
Bernie was born in Winnipeg, but spent his early years in Killarney, Manitoba, enjoying the beach with his older brother and younger brother. In 1963 the family moved to Norberry Drive in St. Vital and Bernie attended Norberry School and Dakota Collegiate, where his natural athletic prowess shone. While playing for the St. Vital Mustangs, his dominant football skills were documented each week in the sports pages of the Winnipeg Tribune.
With the birth of Calvin in 1977, Bernie became a father at a young age. Cameron arrived three years later. Bernie fully supported the boys getting to know their brothers when their mom, Shelly, had Christopher and Todd years later. The bonds became strong, so much so that Christopher and Todd grew to call Bernie 'Dad' as well. Bernie was there for all of them, and was especially proud that Calvin, Cam and Chris followed him into his trade. Throughout his career, his colleagues in Plumbers and Steamfitters Locals 254 and 488 often remarked on Bernie's incredible work ethic and strength. Although his work took him in and out of Winnipeg over the years, he always connected with his family while away.
Predeceased by his father, Bernard Shaw in 2003, Bernie is survived by his mother Thelma, his sons, the light of his life and frequent side-kick granddaughter Mya, her older sister Alyssa, brothers, Cary (Jenny) and Bruce (Catherine), nephews, Trevor (Nina, Magnus) and Neil (Andrea, Keiran and Ellie), and niece Diana (JP). Recently, Garett Crooks became a big part of Grandpa Bernie's heart.
To say Bernie was a unique character is an understatement. Bernie lived life large and everyone who knew him had a 'Bernie' story. Nothing made him happier than hanging with his boys and Mya, a cold beer in hand and Elvis tunes blaring. He did it his way.
A celebration of Bernie's life will be held at a later date. The family will post notice of the event in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Bernie and I were great friends. Started working together in 1977. Remember the day Calvin was born like it was yesterday. Worked with Bernie in Dryden Great Lakes Forest Products, Kelsey Generating Station, and many more projects. Had so many good times together. When we were young we were invincible. As we grow older one values the gift of time. Next time we meet we’ll have a White Sail together on the other side. - Posted by: Garry Palahitski (Friends ) on: Sep 05, 2020

My condolences go out to all of Bernie's family and friends. I worked with Bernie for the last 25 years. Bernie was a great tradesman and UA member. As Gunner alluded to I also had a few cold ones over the years with Bernie. He always talked about his family and how proud he was of them. Even as Bernie passed 60 years old, I would tell him to slow down and let the younger guys do the dirty work. Bernie would have none of that. You were a great friend and we all will miss you. Hi! I do not have THELMA’S address or phone number. I am the daughter of DOROTHY MAZURIK and she and Thelma were friends. I read in the FREE PRESS last Saturday that Thelma’s son, BERNIE , had passed away. I wanted to contact the family and especially THELMA to pass along my very sincere thoughts and prayers. I know that my Mom would want to do the same. She always talked very fondly about the SHAW boys and had a few “ stories” to share about their time at DAKOTA! THELMA, my heart goes out to you and your family. Thank you for attending my Mom’s funeral service. I can be reached at 204-254-4380 - Posted by: Wendy Morier ( MAZURIK) (Friend) on: Jun 03, 2020

Devastating loss!!!!!! I was lucky enough to meet the man I called Burnman, Burnster, Burndog. I have nothing but the utmost love and respect for that man. I was lucky enough to work side by side with him and have a few pops every now and then.Wink Wink. He was a top shelf tradesman and a proud union brother. I was lucky to be around him to soak up all the knowledge he had. During our many conversations over the years he would talk all the time about his family. He was very PROUD OF ALL HIS SONS and loved spending time with mya! Family was the most important thing to him! I will miss our late night conversations that sometimes went on for hours. The world lost a GREAT GREAT man who did it his own way. I was lucky enough to be able to call the man my friend and I am deeply saddened by his passing! My heart goes out to his family. He LOVED you all deeply. A year ago I named my new rotty Bernie in honour of him. He got a good chuckle out of that. Rest in Peace Burnman - Posted by: Gunner ( My Brother and Friend) on: Jun 03, 2020

Sorry to see Bernie pass along. Playing 7 years with the Mustangs got to see a lot of Bruce on the older teams and enjoyed watching him play his hard nosed style. Had a few beers with him at the old Dak also. Although not close to Bernie as he was a few years older definitely always admired him and sad to see him pass at a young age. To Bruce and his whole family my condolences and best wishes. - Posted by: Howard Kitchen (friend) on: Jun 01, 2020

Almost a loss for words when I saw your passing Bernie. Thanks for letting me watch your many great games as a Mustang. Many a great Sunday afternoon. I then saw the same determination and strength when I coached you Bruce. Once again many many fond memories. With the world around us seemingly going crazy having you both in my life let’s me reflect fondly of our friendship. Pray as a family and be "Shaw Tough " - Posted by: Larry Holton (Friend) on: May 31, 2020

I grew up knowing the Shaw family. I was lucky enough to play freshman basketball at Dakota Collegiate with Bernie. He carried the team to win a provincial championship. Wow, what an athlete no matter what sport Bernie decided to play. What I will remember is that grin and then smile he had. My condolences to the entire Shaw family. Rest In Peace Bernie. - Posted by: Craig Hornby (Family Friend) on: May 31, 2020

I will always have such fond memories of Bernie. As a rookie teacher at Norberry, he was a star on my BBall and VBall teams. He was a character in class, of that there is no doubt. However, I always felt a mutual respect between Bernie and me. He'd get in trouble, take his punishment, and we'd both move on. That was Bernie! Having had the pleasure of teaching his younger brother, Bruce, his niece, Diana, and his nephews Trevor and Neil, I will always feel grateful for getting to know so many of the Shaw family. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Bernie: you will be missed by a lot of people! - Posted by: John Matthews (Friend) on: May 30, 2020

I had the privilege of coaching Bernie in basketball at Dakota and I can't believe he is gone. Bernie was one of the most powerful athletes I have ever seen or coached. He was a great player who I believe was widely misunderstood as a kid. Terrific to see that he became such a great father and left a legacy for his kids. - Posted by: Bill Noyes (Coach) on: May 30, 2020

We are so blessed to have had Bernie as a part of our life. We shared the amazing love of our granddaughter Mya and Bernie was so proud of Mya that everyone felt the love he had for her. Michael worked with Bernie and was proud to be his friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bernie's family now and always - Posted by: Mike and Leslie Slobodian (Friend) on: May 30, 2020
