BERNICE WASYLISHEN
November 7, 1928 – May 25, 2020
Mom was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Frank, and leaves to mourn her daughters, Judy (Peter), Janice (Kelly), Darlene, Nancy, Peggy, Penny, her
grandchildren, Jessica, Elliot and Bronson, sisters and brothers, and many nieces and
nephews.
Mom grew up in Bankend, SK then moved to Winnipeg with several of her sisters. She worked at what was then the General
Hospital. She met dad and they married in 1949. They moved to the family farm near Oakbank and built their home in 1962, where they would raise their girls. It was a busy household with six daughters. Mom always worked hard in her huge garden of vegetables and berries and happily shared the bounty with family and friends. She loved her pots of annual flowers and every year she lined the garden with long rows of red and white
petunias. She was always busy with cooking, baking and looking after the house and farm which included years of milking dairy cows, and the raising of pigs and chickens. She was a fabulous baker and her cinnamon buns were famous along with many other baked treats. She was also well known for her delicious perogies and fantastic dill pickles.
After the girls grew up and moved out, the farm continued to be the meeting place for all family celebrations and many family dinners. Mom and dad eventually sold the animals and the farm land, but kept their home with the yard at the corner of Springfield and Cooks Creek Roads. They resided there until 2008, when failing health made it obvious that they could no longer stay, even with the help of their very good neighbours. Mom was very dedicated to her faith and took great pride in her church, The Immaculate Conception Church at Cooks Creek, where she spent many years as a parishioner and enjoyed working with her good friends of the Ladies Society.
Mom happily resided at Concordia Village for 11 years, where she leaves behind many dear and close friends.
A service will be held at a later date.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. Your mom was an amazing rock. She always had everything under control and made all tasks look so easy. She worked so hard but it showed in her yard, family and the smile on her face when you popped in at her place unannounced. She always had something for you at her table and would not take no for an answer. To me she had strength beyond belief and sure loved her church at Cook's Creek. We have been friends with Frank & Bernice since 1964, and although we left Oakbank in 1967, we have maintained a long distance relationship and visited every few years when visiting Manitoba. Frank & Bernice welcomed us into their home and treated us like family. Bernice was a kind and loving person who always showed a keen interest in us and our family, writing us with news on their family, and keeping us up to date on Oakbank news. When her sight failed and she could no longer write, we talked on the phone a couple of times a year.
