MURRAY CHALMERS
February 23, 1954 - November 29, 2019

It is with deep sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Murray Chalmers on November 29, at Richmond Hospital in B.C.
Murray's early years were spent on the family farm in the Kingsley community near Somerset, Manitoba. He was a scholar, athlete, people person, but most notably a gifted musician with an ear to be able to play anything he heard. Upon graduation, Murray moved west to Castlegar B.C. to take aviation training. At this point British Columbia became his home. He was first employed by CP Air and later by Air Canada.
Murray was predeceased by his mother Sharon Chalmers in 2016. He is survived by his children, David Chalmers (Stevie) and Breanne Chalmers. Also mourning Murray's passing are his father Lloyd Chalmers and siblings, Patti (Bill) Matheson, Jan (Svetlana) Chalmers, Norma (Don) Cnudde, Nancy (Doug) Furness, Leigh Karpinsky and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Manitoba Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

  • So sad a loss. I just found out of his passing recently. I knew Murray years ago as a first officer for the airline he worked for back in the 80s He would often eat dinner or stop by for a nightcap in our lounge when he had a stayover at the hotel I worked for at the time. He was one of the kindest, gentlest and humble of individuals I had ever had the pleasure of knowing. When I no longer worked at that hotel and was at home with my newborn, he found out and brought my little son a cute little hockey sleeper and hat and took me out for a nice supper, just so I could have a break from my son for an evening. Such a gentlemen and very compassionate. I still was still recalling that memory and kindness all these years later and that's how I found out of his passing. So sorry he is gone, gentle soul that he was. - Posted by: christine stevenson (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2024

  • I always remember Murray when he first came to Swan Lake School. He was top of the class from day one. I wondered if we could ever be friends but Murray quickly let it be known he was friends with everyone. That was a great quality in Murray in that he never left anyone out. Now a day's we would call him a people person. Robert Schenk in his story summed up a lot of what Murray was like as we all played in the same band. I would like to share the last time I saw Murray and what that was like. He was between jobs and visiting back at the farm. He calls me up and asks if I would like to go flying with him (I had never flown in a small plane before. It was a very memorable day spent with Murray and I have always cherished him for remembering his friends and sharing his life with them. I pray God is looking after you now Murray and we will all meet again someday. Your friend. RS - Posted by: Rod Sheffield (School and small band friend.) on: Dec 07, 2020

  • Gosh what a sad surprise to hear of Murray's passing. I first met Murray when the Kingsley rural school was closed and students were sent to Swan Lake elementary. I believe we were in Grade 7 or 8 and even then Murray's musical talent in guitar and piano would outshine the others. Daphne Stevenson organized the Hush Puppies to learn music and perform at community concerts, and yes, the Channel 7 Amature Show where we won the event one night. Murray was always a core member. One Saturday he had learned to play some Tijuanna Brass song on the Glokenspeil with four mallets while the rest of us were struggling with two. In high school he was always involved in music and formed a band if memory serves called Baker Street Blues. There was always musical talent coming out of the Chalmers family and I am proud to have known Murray as my friend. Robert Schenk - Posted by: Robert Schenk (School friend) on: Jun 13, 2020
