OREST OUCHAREK
February 6, 1940 - June 7, 2020
Orest joined the RCMP in 1961, Training "N" Division, and later posted: 1962 Peace River, 1962 Grande Prairie, 1963 Spirit River, 1967 Division S.I.B. "A" Section, 1969 Calgary Security & Intelligence, 1972 Ottawa Security Services, then to Manitoba - 1975 Carberry, 1978 Lynn Lake, 1980 Lundar, 1987 "D" Division Readers, 1989 Gimli, 1994 retired and remained in Gimli. His long and illustrious career with the RCMP was however, his second choice. Orest first studied at Teachers College in Saskatchewan, and it was only while walking home after his first practicum experience with a class full of Grade 2 students that he stopped by the recruiting center.
Orest and wife Lorraine were married in Grande Prairie, 1963, and raised two boys, Greg (wife Jo-Anne) and Robb (wife Carole), and loved caring for grandchildren, Mitchell, Andrew, Nicole and Kally. Although his career saw the family move on a regular basis, these opportunities to become involved in each community as a coach, mentor, teammate and friend gave rise to an extended second family that always had him surrounded with love. He has touched the lives of many people and will be dearly missed. A poem, Heart of Gold (author unknown) clipped and saved by Lorraine is a sentiment to the man we loved:
A heart of gold stopped beating,
Hardworking hands went to rest,
God took you home to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
We will always remember the
way you looked,
The way you walked and smiled,
All the things you did for us
Will be with us all the while.
You lived your life for those you loved,
Your children taught and grown,
He called to you to come and dwell,
Where no more work is done.
A funeral service, supported by the RCMP Veterans Association, is planned to be held in Gimli at some time in the future when public gatherings are opened up again.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, we request donations be made to the Manitoba Children's Wish Foundation.
