PATRICIA (PAT) LOIS KETTNER
(nee WATERMAN)
She was predeceased by her husband Paul; her parents, Max and Rose Waterman; and her brother Dr. Daniel (Danny) Waterman.
Pat was born in Calgary in 1927. She had many fond memories of childhood summers spent with her aunts and uncles at her maternal grandparents' homestead near Rumsey in southern Alberta.
When Pat was nine, her parents lost their small business in the depression and the family moved to Winnipeg. Pat attended St. John's Technical High School and then the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1948 as one of the first female architects in Manitoba. She practiced for some years at the prominent Winnipeg architectural firm Green Blankstein Russell (GBR) and was proud of the mid-century Modernist family home that she designed and built in West Kildonan in the late fifties.
In the early seventies she turned her attention from architecture to fine art and in 1972 enrolled in the University of Manitoba School of Art. She studied at the Banff School of Art, attended an Emma Lake workshop, and studied under the woodcutting artist Toshi Yoshida in Japan. She was one of the founding members of the Medea Gallery and until 2005 she worked daily in her studio. Her work can be found in private collections in Canada, England and the United States.
Pat was in many ways a modern woman, ahead of her time. She was progressive, a feminist and fiercely independent, and she passed these values on to her children.
Pat and Paul met shortly after the war and were married in July 1948. After a brief time in Nelson, BC, they returned to Winnipeg to start a family.
Pat loved being surrounded by her family and friends and organized many family dinners for Jewish holidays and other occasions. Pat and Paul enjoyed summers at their Falcon Lake cottage. She loved to swim, sail, golf and pick berries.
Pat was a passionate bridge player; her Tuesday night bridge group comprised a close circle of friends who played regularly for almost seven decades. She continued to play bridge until shortly before her death.
During their many years together, Pat and Paul enjoyed travelling extensively on five continents. For over twenty years, they spent time in the winter in Puerto Vallarta. Their children and grandchildren often gathered in Mexico for wonderful family times. When not in Mexico, Pat enjoyed her winters in Winnipeg painting, cross country skiing, frequenting the theatre and spending time with her friends, children and grandchildren.
Pat is survived by her children, Gary (Fatemeh Ashkan), Shawn (Peter Harrison), and Beth; grandchildren, Samantha, Maxwell (Phoebe Chard), Leah and Adam; and numerous nieces; nephews; and cousins.
Thanks to Dr. Tunji Fatoye and the staff at the Kildonan Medical Centre for many years of extraordinary care. Thanks as well to the staff at the Simkin Center for their kind support under the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A graveside service will be held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Sunday, June 14, at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

I had the honour to attend the 2nd Annual Community Partner Recognition Breakfast with Ryan Croy. It was nice to meet Dr. Kettner, whose niece happened to be the Valedictorian at her graduating class, the year after I graduated from high school. Meeting Dr. David (Cree for white bear) Barnard, O.M. and Ken Opaleke was a pleasure. Drs. Cholakis have been providing me dental care at their private practice for over 30 years, and I have a lot to say about them! My parents had the pleasure of sharing many interesting and engaging conversations over dinner with Pat at The Parkway. Barb & Don truly enjoyed their association and times spent with Pat (and Mary!). Sincere sympathy at this sad time. - Posted by: Laurie Curtis (Brownell) (Acquaintance ) on: Jun 22, 2020

I have such fond memories of visiting Winnipeg with my dad David (Paul's brother) all through the 70's, 80's & 90's. Pat and Paul would have the entire extended family over and we would gather at the huge dining table as long as the house and eat 'til we burst. Pat never seemed stressed out or flustered. I can still picture her enjoying her family and laughing through it all! I loved her art and grew up with it in my family home in Toronto. She was so talented and yet, so humble. I will miss her smile most. Love Jane - Posted by: Dr Jane Kettner (neice) on: Jun 19, 2020

We have such affection for your mom. She was like an aunt to us growing up in the Peg. What an amazing friend she was to my mom for more than 60 years. Your mom was also very talented architect, so unusual for the 40’s. She designed yours and our childhood homes. What a cool house to grow up in! It was the house of the future and still looks great even today. We also fondly remember all those Tuesday night bridge parties especially the leftover treats. Our thoughts are with you and we know your families will be a big support during this sad time. - Posted by: Joy Richman and Sally Slater (Friends) on: Jun 14, 2020
