Herbert Georg Liebig passed away peacefully June 14, 2020, at 5:41 p.m. at Seven Oaks General Hospital, with his daughter Marlene at his side.
Herbert was born in Königsberg, East Prussia but grew up in Lübeck, Germany. He immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1960 with a degree in Technical Drafting. One of the highlights of his early career was creating the blueprints at Western Flyer for the first transit bus along with his co-worker Jack Newman.
In 1963 he met Charlotte Harms at a youth group at Gordon Bell High School and were married June 4, 1966. Together they raised three daughters, Evelyn, Karin, and Marlene.
He switched careers in his early 30s and obtained his diploma in Painting and Decorating in 1975 from Red River College. He became an employee at Health Sciences Centre in maintenance in 1980 from where he retired in 2004 after 24 years of dedicated service at age 65 years.
Throughout the years he enjoyed flying control line model planes with Perfect Circle Flying Club. He also had many enjoyable visits to Thunder Bay to spend time with his grandchildren. Herbert was also a longtime member of Portage Avenue Church and had been baptized in 1962 at McDermot Avenue Baptist Church.
Herbert is survived by his loving wife Charlotte (Harms) of 54 years; his daughters, Evelyn Clark (Peter), Karin Simpson (Robert) and Marlene Liebig; grandchildren, Heather, Amy, Matthew, Eric Clark, and Safina and Sarita Simpson. Also survived by sister-in-law Waldina Neufeld and brother-in-law John Harms and their families; Brigette his niece in Germany, and other relatives in Canada and Germany.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Maria and Hermann Liebig, and his sister Gretel, all of Germany, and his sister-in-law Ruth Harms, and brother-in-law David Neufeld.
We would like to thank the staff of Seven Oaks General Hospital Floor 4 and Floor 5 for the loving care provided to our husband and father during his time there.
A public viewing will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.
Interment to be held at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Charlotte and Family. I would like to express my condolences on the loss of Herbert. I knew Herbert in Lübeck. Herbert and my brother Gerd were good friends. We often went Sundays to the Lübeck Blankensee Airport, where Herbert and my brother were flying homebuilt planes. Because Blankensee was too close to the iron—curtain, the airport was not in use in the 50's. Therefore it was an Ideal area for the local model flying club. Last week Gerd phoned me from Germany, and we reminisced about our childhood, which coincidentally included talking about times at Blankensee with Herbert. Feel free to contact me if you would like more info on Herbert's time in Lübeck. I am the only member of my family that immigrated and reside in Coldstream, BC. - Posted by: Jens (John) von Dohren (Freind ) on: Jun 30, 2020

  • Dear Charlotte & family, We are thinking of you often and praying, too. Due to Covid-19 we are staying home. May God give you strength for each day. So glad Marlene could be with Herb at the end. Glad she is helping you, too. Your friendship means a lot to us. - Posted by: John and Shirley Bergen (friends) on: Jun 28, 2020
